W A R N I N G !

This funny little word game is often used by hackers on internet chat rooms
to get people's "mother's maiden name", "Favorite pet's name".
and retrieve credit records based on previous address.

Getting this confidential information helps them crack online accounts
and also to verify their phony "ID" to a clerk by phone.

If it was up to me, I'd delete this entire thread right now.

Social engineering (con games) are pretty easy,
and identity fraud is the fastest growing crime in our society.

Codeborg,
I dont appreciate the slam at my integrity.I posted this same thread on another site we are all familiar with, quite a while ago,and it is still therre. This is just for fun,and I am not forcing anyone to participate or disclose anything.
I must admit,I do find it interesting that you would think of that possibility and ask for the deletion of this thread.Have you actually done what you are insinuating I am trying to do,is that your problem?
In short,if you dont like the game, dont play.
In other words.....!@#$ OFF

Quickie:

Codeborg is right in that this game is used by hackers, I do not think he meant to imply any ill-will on your part mm, just to prevent possible danger.

Thing is, in this case there is really no danger. The screen names here can't be tied to any other identity without factors that would render this game insignificant.

A2K does not process credit cards here (all transactions take place on paypals secured servers) and there is really no risk in playing this game here.

Now just don't go and play this game with the same guy who keeps asking you for your passwords on IM, that's all. ;-)

Mysterman, my sincere apologies that you interpreted my post as an accusation. That was not at all my intent. This has nothing to do with you or anyone's integrity, so please don't take it personally. I was only sharing the origin of the Name Game, and that people should realize the possible consequences of disclosing personal information online.

I've seen the game played on a few different forums, by people who simply got the idea somewhere else. But the fact is, hackers did create this type of game as a con, and people do lose thousands of dollars to it. I only thought of it because I read an article that describes how well it works.

Also, the contents of this discussion thread are permanently archived across the internet, for millions of people to see. Some of them are unscrupulous and once you post something here, it's forever. Many A2K users do have their full name and location known here, either through their profile, their www website, photos posted on MSN, or their own ongoing references and disclosures. Just be aware.

If you see an unlocked door somewhere else (an old thread on another board), that doesn't mean you should unlock all your doors. Also, the essence of any con game is that no one is forced to participate, so that kind of confidence is pretty scary.

You asked me a question, maybe just to shift the perceived accusation back onto me. But no, I do not harvest fake ID's from the internet. Certainly, that's not why I would reveal the origin of the name game!

Having worked on a few websites, I do have a list of 150,000 passwords and sometimes browse through them looking for patterns. Part of my job was to disqualify too-simple, easily-guessed passwords. I can tell you that many of them *are* a pets name or a maiden name, and dozens of hackers tried to come in using such names. Anything confidential is useful. This thread doesn't have a lot of info on it, but it only takes 1 connection in a 1,000 to make a hackers day.

All I'm saying is be aware. Hopefully some people will appreciate the caution, and I'm compelled to stand by these facts regardless of how anyone feels about them. Sorry.

I guess you'll have to call me T-Bone Wilson when I'm naked. :-)
