@ehBeth,
There's a peat bog in Siberia, bigger than France, and if it gets much warmer it will make rainforest conservation irrelevant.

@spendius,
Hi Spendius, long time no hear from. Thanks for joining in - and a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and family.

Stradee, nice picture of the first Thanksgiving. Of course, you know who the pilgrims were thanking - the Native Americans of course, they were the ones who brought the food. And, one of the Native Americans spoke English more precisely than the pilgrims ever could. True story.

Happy Thanksgiving all.

@danon5,
If it were not for the Indians, there would have been a shortage of pilgrims from the very beginning. Quite ironic.

Hope that all had a very good day with family and friends.

Enough of this genteel polite banter.

I thrive on confrontation.

The only thing that will save the forests is us not wanting their economic use. Most of Europe and north Asia were forests once. All England near enough was coast to coast trees and bushes.

We are just warming up the permafrosted peat bogs so that the methane gets bubbling. In full swing it is supposed to be the equivalent of a squillion factory chimneys and the exhausts of cars idling at traffic lights in a queue a few hundred times round the globe long put together.

@spendius,
Economics is certainly one of the reasons for vanishing Rainforest lands, but nations are working with the United States to quell logging and land clearing. And yes, it will cost nations billions.
Without rainforests, our atmosphere's toast.

@danon5,
Dan, my Thanksgiving takes place tomorrow at daughters. Very Happy

Yesterday hearing the news regarding the wild horse sanctuary, thought OMG - our wishes are granted in mysterious and wonderful ways! Now the next hurdle will be stopping the BLM from rounding up any more horses, by decreasing the amount of cattle permitted grazing on public lands. Another miracle to work toward.

Purchased a few movies today and plan hybernating till tomorrow.

Have a good day all ~

Washington Post Article - EPA, DOI Chiefs busy erasing Bush's mark...

Few federal agencies are expected to undergo as radical a transformation under President-elect Barack Obama as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Interior Department, which have been at the epicenter of many of the Bush administration's most intense scientific and environmental controversies.

The agencies have different mandates - the EPA holds sway over air and water pollution, while Interior administers the nation's vast federal land holdings as well as the Endangered Species Act - but both deal with some of the country's most pressing environmental concerns, such as climate change. And over the past eight years, many career employees and rank-and-file scientists have clashed with Bush appointees over a number of those of issues, including whether the federal government should allow California to regulate tailpipe emissions from automobiles and how best to prevent imperiled species from disappearing altogether.

In June 2007, Obama told reporters in Reno, Nev., that he would not hesitate to reverse many of the environmental policies Bush has enacted by executive order.
