correct verbs

On Children's Day this year at school, I not only played games with my classmates, but I also learnt that teamwork is/was very important if we are/were working as a team.

Which verbs should I use? I want to emphasize that teamwork is very important when working as a team. Can I use the present tense or should I use the past tense since Children's Day is over?

Many thanks

@Yoong Liat,
The choice of verb depends on your focus, YL, which means that both are possible.

To suggest anything else would be to say that there a certain things, thought, ideas that cannot be expressed by language. Certainly, that's an untenable position.

Agree with JTT. Either is correct, depending on what you want to say. Present tense implies the lessons you learned (AE favors learned over learnt)(Come down to that, I'm not sure even the Brits use learnt) are timeless, or at the least still good now and for the foreseeable future.
