"Anonymous" hacks Sarah Palin's Yahoo email account and publishes emails

Palin's private e-mail hacked, posted to 'Net

Quote:
The activist group called "anonymous," best known for its jousts with the Church of Scientology, has apparently hacked into the private Yahoo e-mail account of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican candidate for vice president. Contents of that account, including two sample e-mails, an index of messages and Palin family photos, have been posted by the whistleblower site Wikileaks, which contends that they constitute evidence that Palin has improperly used her private e-mail to shield government business from public scrutiny, an issue that had already been raised by others.

Interesting! However, it's my opinion that any revelation from that "leak" will not affect her popularity.

@Robert Gentel,
Here is the screen shot slide show that came with the article:

http://www.networkworld.com/slideshows/2008/091708-palin-email-hack.html

Here is the email database on wikileaks (currently down for me apparently due to traffic):

---------------------------------

I don't think this is an ethical hack at all, and "anonymous" loses a lot of respect from me as a result of this. The charge of using the account to avoid the paper trail smacks of an apologist pretext for hacking her account (and "hacking" most likely means just phishing it).

The fact that they're almost certainly doing it for the children and to save the Earth doesn't count??

@cicerone imposter,
I agree, I don't think they had any legitimate moral grounds to do it, and while I haven't seen the emails I suspect they didn't find anything untoward in the emails anyway.

But it's still interesting from a computer security standpoint. I am often amazed at how insecure email communication is in practice (even knowing it's very insecure in theory) are and it shouldn't have been this easy to get in.

@Robert Gentel,
You're missing the point.

This "hack" means massive security , and therefore secrecy.

This is a textbook strawman.

@LionTamerX,
Even after your explanation I must still be "missing it" then.

@cicerone imposter,
Sure, but do the rest of us need to hear about it? Laughing

I find it to be mighty convenient, that this account was hacked - and her emails deleted - during a time when she was refusing to hand them over. Not saying it didn't happen, but gosh - the timing sure was convenient for her...

@Cycloptichorn,
She's already acting like Bush; claiming "executive privilege." No matter about state laws; she's above the laws of her state.

Some more information about the hacking is surfacing:

It doesn't sound like the work of "Anonymous" to me.

@Nick Ashley,
Anonymous denied it:
Quote:
One of the main tenets of the anonymous movement against the Church of Scientology is to stay legal. Anonymous is no fixed group, just a term for anyone who acts without giving their name. We don't know who is responsible for the hack on Sarah Palin's mail account or what their attitudes to Scientology or anything else are. For us, they are anonymous, because we don't know who they are and they are not us.

The details of the hack are pretty open now.

http://pastebin.com/f652c44fb

This was 4chan work, not anonymous and a lot of people participated without working in concert. A lot of them want to expose Palin and are sorting the emails they downloaded to publish anything they find incriminating.

The political conspiracy theorists need a life outside of politics.

NASHVILLE - State Rep. Mike Kernell said today that he was aware of Internet rumors about his son being the subject of speculation that he accessed the personal e-mail of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Asked whether he or his son, a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, had been contacted by authorities investigating the break-in of Palin's account, he responded:

"Me, no."

As far as his 20-year-old son, David, he said: "I can't say. That doesn't mean he has or hasn't (been contacted by investigators)."

Kernell, D-Memphis, cited the father-son relationship.

He said he had talked to his son today, but that he talks to his son regularly.

He declined further comment.

Attempts to reach the younger Kernell for comment were not successful.
