Quote:
WASHINGTON " For decades, opposition to new offshore oil drilling has been a core principle of Congressional Democrats, ranking in the party pantheon somewhere just below protecting Social Security and increasing the minimum wage.

But a concerted Republican assault over domestic oil production and the threat of political backlash from financially pressed motorists have Democrats poised to embrace a fundamental shift in energy policy.

Even more surprising, the turnabout is led by the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who has a history of fighting oil drilling going back to the early days of her career in California.

Under a measure being assembled for a vote in the House next week, oil rigs could go up 50 miles from the shores of states that welcome drilling and 100 miles off any section of the United States coast " a stark reversal on an issue that has been a Democratic environmental touchstone since the 1980s.

So much for their opposition to drilling.
Instead, it seems they all caved in to keep their seats.
I thought the dems were supposed to be the principaled party, willing to buck the voters to do what they thought was right?

Instead, they are just politicians, more interested in staying in DC then anything else.

But it does beg the question...does this mean the dems are now in bed with big oil, the way they like to accuse the repubs of being?

Geez, you guys are dense.

The Federal moratorium on offshore drilling expires at the end of September. If nothing was done, then practically ALL restrictions would vanish immediately. The Republicans have signaled that they will do everything they can to hold up any bill which does not permit drilling until the moratorium has passed. The Dems are left with little choice but to find a compromise; otherwise, they will lose everything.

Please do a little research in the future before casting aspersions. Please.

@Cycloptichorn,
I didnt cast aspersions.
I quoted the NY Times and asked a reasonable question.

Did the dems cave in to political pressure or not?
And I thought the dems were saying there would be no compromise on this issue.

It's a MAJOR reversal when the democrats do it, and 'GOOD' change when the republicans do it.

It's more accurate to say that they caved in to the timeline, then political pressure.

@Cycloptichorn,
It's more accurate to say they caved in to the reasonable position of DRILLING.

Dems have no principals, they just ride the coattails of the right.

Not so fast... I'm sure Pelosi has embedded a few deal killers in that deal.
If she does, it won't pass and everyone will blame Bush / Republicans.

@Woiyo9,
Right. Because when the Democrats refuse to compromise on something they are far-left dogmatists who refuse to reach across the aisle and work together with the opposition for the good of the country, like McCain would; and when they do compromise on something they are untrustworthy liars without principles who give in at the slightest pressure and sold out to the coattails of the right.

Or something.

@H2O MAN,
My humble request is this.
Please show the door to that lady who is unfit to occupy the august chair.
Iwill be immensely pleased if the opponent lady who had lost her son win.
But in USA Democracy is shaped by corporate lobby.
