We don't check references, or do other things that big businesses do. Rather, we look at some seemingly intangible things like how quick you can smile or how wide awake you appear to be at a 9 am interview. I have been in the retailing biz for 35 years, and that strategy has worked for me.
One suggestion, dude (may I call you dude?). Get to work 5-10 minutes ahead of time and take out the trash or something and then clock in. It is a great investment of 5 minutes.
