Some hosts don't warn their guests that they're expected to pay for party

Quote:
"When the bill came," Bowman says, the birthday girl "smiled and made a big production by way of a toast, saying, 'Thank you all so much for my lovely birthday dinner. I really do appreciate it. You guys are great. Here's to you!' Then she just sat there, waiting for us to decide how to split the bill."

The bill for the birthday girl and her seven "guests" came to a whopping $3,450, which someone suggested splitting evenly. That worked out to $500 per person, plus tip.

It's my party, and I'll charge if I want to.

The nerve of some people!

I just can't believe that someone would do that sort of thing. I hope Little Ms. Birthday Girl sees this article. What an apalling person.

I might've let someone pull this kind of crap when I was in my 20s. No way in hell I'd let 'em get away with it now.

"Will you come to my party" means that folks are invited as guests.

"Will you meet us for dinner" means that folks are expected to pay their own way (including the host).

Once upon a time, a good friend threw a bachelor party for another friend. After interviewing the bachelor, the guest list and evening activities were planned. Carry the eight, add that to this....holy..
Plan devised. Charge x amount of dollars per guest. Fifty guests@--$=enough and then some.
Hall rented, tickets purchased, booze, food..........etc.
Eight people showed. New meaning to RSVP.

@alex240101,
I've never heard of this pay for the party stuff. BYOB, sure. Pot lock, written on the invitation, is as old as the hills. The crust of some people, as my aunt would have said...

I remember my only visit to a really good sushi restaurant very well. Loved the food, except for the raw sea urchin. Appalled at the bill, which we picked up. But that was nothing compared to this story.

I had a party like that too, Alex, only the whole thing would have been only eight people, steaks, etc. for all, and me working part time, what was I thinking... Two couples didn't show and didn't call; one turned out to be that the marriage broke up that night, and the other.. I forget, but it was another good reason. Still, it was a weird feeling of the "nobody likes me" sort.

whow...who needs enemies with "friends" like these. I have never been invited
where I needed to pay my way, but I simply would refuse if it were the case.
If you're invited to a birthday party, you bring a gift and that's it!
If you're invited to a potluck party, you bring food to share, and if you're invited to dinner at a friend's home you bring a present for the host. That's proper
etiquette in my book.

I think I would have just stood up and said Happy Birthday and walked out the door.

@jespah,
OK; I met Leslie Gore,
when she was singing in a group of Golden Oldies' singers
from the 1950s in Las Vegas.

It was fun, and nostalgic.
