What are the best films you have seen this year? Why did you like them so much?

@Ragman,
Of course I like Cinema Paradiso and agree re interpretation but there are much more interesting films in the catalog.
I took it as light, while liking it fine enough.

Child 44

One of the few movies that were as good as the books they were based on.

@Leadfoot,
Good story amidst a carnival of accents.

@panzade,
I forgave the accents :-) I thought the atmospherics were spot on though.

Bridge of Spies is definitely going to gather a ton of Oscar nominations for:
Steven Spielberg, direction; Tom Hanks, lead actor; the Coen Brothers, original script (not adapted from a book as far as I can tell); Thomas Newman, original score (surprised to not see John William's name on the credits); Janusz Kaminski, cinematography.

@tsarstepan,
Thanks for the title. I'd never heard of it.

Desperate for something to see. (Coens and Hanks? Sounds cool.)

I can tell you about a film I did not like: Assassin. It is slow paced and as murky as those late 70-early 80s adaptations of John LeCarre. Ugh. That I fell asleep twice did not help.

The costumes were beautiful and the closing theme was wonderful. But don't bother.

@plainoldme,
Eyeing one of two movies to see tonight after work:
Legend (2015) or Carol (2015). Both are opening in limited theatrical releases this weekend. Both have serious Oscar buzz following them.

Any suggestions which one I should pick?

@tsarstepan,
If you know what's good for you, you'll go and see Legend you slag.

Seriously I've not seen either, the Kemp brothers portrayal of the Krays was very good. So good that I don't see the need for another quite so soon, then again Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Toby Jones both played Truman Capote in the same year so what the **** do I know.

I did end up buying my ticket for Legend. Tom Hardy is an insanely incredible actor. It's about time that the Academy gives him a nomination. He should have gotten one for Bronson (2008).

Not a movie but the first episode of "The Man In The High Tower" alone was worth signing up on Amazon prime.

@Leadfoot,
Is that a Stephen King thing Leadfoot?

Edit: Philip K Dick, eh? Doh.

I have a to topic going. It started being just about HBO productions, but any good TV recommendations are very welcome.

@dlowan,
Yep, based on a PKD piece. Every thing the guy wrote is worth reading I think.

@Leadfoot,
I've read the book, it won a Hugo award if I remember. My favourite book of his is The Three Stigmata Of Palmer Eldrich. That would make a fantastic film.

@Leadfoot,
If you're into religion The Transmigrations Of Timothy Archer is about the best, but Valis and The Divine Invasion are both pretty good too.

@tsarstepan,
Adored Bronson and agree about Hardy. I almost went to Fury Road on his appearance alone. But, nah.

Thanks for heads up about Legend. Give some feedback when you will.
