The mutual defense clause was invoked because "it was determined that the attack was directed from abroad", and because the United States had provided ''clear and compelling proof'' that al Qaeda was behind the attacks.

Of course, al Qaeda operating from Afghanistan and being supported by the Taliban, Afghanistan was the target of the NATO mission.

That doesn't mean that the clause was invoked because "Afghanistan had bombed the twin towers." That's nonsense.

It is unfortunate that such an occurrence happened under the watch of Dubya. Anyone else would have reacted in a efficient and prudent manner.
