I remembered this quote from a PopSci article. Einstein said something about human stupidity being the only infinite resource... he may have misunderestimated that one.

VCS (very clever scientist) invents a device that literally converts garbage into energy: Plasma gasification
Current flows continuously through this newly formed plasma, creating a field of extremely intense energy very much like lightning. The radiant energy of the plasma arc is so powerful, it disintegrates trash into its constituent elements by tearing apart molecular bonds. The system is capable of breaking down pretty much anything except nuclear waste, the isotopes of which are indestructible. The only by-products are an obsidian-like glass used as a raw material for numerous applications, including bathroom tiles and high-strength asphalt, and a synthesis gas, or “syngas”"a mixture of primarily hydrogen and carbon monoxide that can be converted into a variety of marketable fuels, including ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen.

Perhaps the most amazing part of the process is that it’s self-sustaining. Just like your toaster, Startech’s Plasma Converter draws its power from the electrical grid to get started. The initial voltage is about equal to the zap from a police stun gun. But once the cycle is under way, the 2,200˚F syngas is fed into a cooling system, generating steam that drives turbines to produce electricity. About two thirds of the power is siphoned off to run the converter; the rest can be used on-site for heating or electricity, or sold back to the utility grid. “Even a blackout would not stop the operation of the facility,” Longo says.
All you gotta do is chuck garbage that would be landfill in one end and get free energy out the other. Simple, no? Not in the land of the 2nd Amendment it isn't. One tiny problem, you have to allow for all different types of waste mixed in with ordinary rubbish..

Quote:
sometimes they’ve thrown in live shotgun shells from a hunting trip

WTF! Live shotgun shells! Christ! What kind of imbeciles do they give firearms to over there? 'Hey Joe, what should I do with all this live ammo? Toss it in the rubbish? And all that leftover gelignite and detonators? In there as well? 100 kilos of ammonium nitrate? In the bin'

@Setanta,
You are not going to believe this, but that high centered car is remarkably similar to a little hangup in the front yard. The difference is that the lady needed to change directions, drove into the driveway, made a big circle, and tried to exit through the front yard - not noticing the two foot high retaining wall. Oddly, she did not appreciate the cameras.

Say cheese! The shocking moment a croc took a snap at a posing fisherman
By RICHARD SEARS
[Source]

It should be an obvious rule - don't try to have your picture taken with a crocodile by waving fish bait at it.

As this startled tourist discovered, it won't work. And it annoys the crocodile.

The 12ft beast launched itself from the aptly named South Alligator River in Northern Territory, Australia, and tried to dine on Israeli backpacker Novon Mashiah.

Say cheese: Novon Mashiah points towards the croc and grins for the camera

Not so funny now: The croc lunges for Mr Mashiah, saved only by the size of his boat

Mr Mashiah, 27, just managed to jump clear on his small fishing boat - as these pictures taken by a friend in another boat show - and escaped with nothing more than a case of severe embarrassment.

"I saw this crocodile and thought I'd tease it a bit with a small piece of bait, just to get it in quite close to me for the picture," he said.

"I was playing around, pointing at it, laughing - when it suddenly jumped up at me. I didn't realise crocs were so aggressive."

His antics drew a typically forthright response from Australians writing to the local paper.

One said: "What the bloody hell did you expect? That the croc would jump up, put his arm around your neck and smile for the camera?"

Another wrote: "What a dimwit. Considering you still have both hands, use one of them to slap yourself!"

Woman to 911: Help! I'm locked inside my car [MP3]

Quote:
"My car will not start. I'm locked inside my car," the unidentified woman said.

"Nothing electrical works. And it's getting very hot in here, and I'm not feeling well."

The dispatcher asked the woman if she was able to manually pull the lock up on the door.

The woman said she would try, and then, she said, "Yes, I got the door open."
