@nimh,
Yep, looks like it.. hhhmmmmm...

So... that should give RexRed lots of brownie points for his Reputation... cause whenever he goes off on a rant, lots of people are sure to respond...

Is that meant to encourage us to just not respond to stupid posts? But what if someone says something - not, like, stupid - just, to your views, offensive? Will you then be rewarding him by rebutting him?

So many questions...

@CalamityJane,
Would you be willing to pay for them? I'm actually serious, Amazon has a file hosting service where we can make code where they'd bill you for the file use. It's cheap at cents per GB/month.

We aren't ready to start hosting images again yet, the day may come but if members want to pay for their own bandwidth I'd be happy to make the features faster, I'm just not ready to commit to multimedia hosting as well.

I know other forums do it, but most other forums don't think out their long term viability too far. I just bought a forum that lost all it's uploads recently and know of no forum software that has an upload system that can actually scale with use.

So while it's possible, it's extra expensive and extra work for not much payoff. We'd do the work on the Amazon platform if enough members wanted it enough to pay Amazon for the hosting though, as it would scale nicely. Otherwise, the image hosting feature is a low priority for us, as it introduces business strategy complications that we'd rather put off till we have more overall scale and can absorb image hosting costs better.

@nimh,
Lots of times I find myself auto voting up on reply to something I didn't think should be voted up. But if I cared enough I can still vote it down.

The problem that seeks to rectify is that there was immediate benefit to the individual to vote down, and not to vote up and the imbalance in motivation helped skew the voting more toward negativity. Given that the posts replies to may well be the most worthy posts to reply to and it's always good to ignore the disruptive trolls I think the overall culture will be better for it, even if there are plenty of individual cases where it doesn't make sense the user can fix those and I think there are more cases where the vote makes sense and would have otherwise gone uncast.

It's basically a tweak to put the site's culture on more positive footing and it's working out pretty well so far (in my opinion, of course) as the change in the pattern from yesterday to today seems pretty positive.

@Robert Gentel,
I think it's a great idea and it does seem to be working well.

Yeah absolutely! Actually, the forum who has this feature also has an Amazon button for members to click and buy via that site, and a certain percentage of the proceeds will go towards the upkeep of the site.

People do upload tons of pictures here at a2k, and imageshack is a good site
to upload from, having the feature built in would make it so much easier
though.

If there aren't enough members interested in such feature, that's okay - I'll
succumb to my grief, but will continue with imageshack.

Awesome idea - but only if the link to it is called 'greatest hits.'

@CalamityJane,
CJane, the olden a2k used to have an amazon link on the home page, same deal I believe. I've wondered if that is worth it for the new a2k to have too. There might be reasons not, including clutter versus small income (guessing wildly).

@ossobuco,
osso, I order a lot through Amazon, so I definitely would use the Amazon link
through here if it could generate some dinero for a2k.

@ossobuco,
There was an Amazon link for all of us on the old A2K : amazon.ca, amazon.de etc etc

It was handy - though amazon.ca still doesn't carry much in comparison to amazon.com

@CalamityJane,
Well if it's just ease of use you are going for in the mean time you can always use one of their tools.

http://reg.imageshack.us/content.php?page=features
http://reg.imageshack.us/content.php?page=3rdparty

There are toolbars and other browser addons that can make it easier, and there are also lots of programs for PC or Mac that also streamline it a bit.

We can also make a preference so that you have what you see at the following link on your posting page to upload directly from there (but not insert the bbcode cleanly, you still have to do that manually):

http://www.imageshack.us/iframe.php?txtcolor=111111&type=blank

That preference above would be fairly easy to implement if there is interest.

I'm afraid, you lost me here - is this the link to buy at Amazon via a2k?

Bella Dea started a new thread suggesting more smileys. Pukey smiley and the like. Cant say I share the sentiment, but passing it on.

Other reason I bring this up is cause it made me think of a feature I'd like. See, Littlek told her, isnt there already a thread up for requests, and Bella answered, I wouldnt know, I cant find anything anymore. And I was a little annoyed, thinking oh come on, there's the able2know tag, you can find all those threads right there.

But you know, thats not fair. Cause it's true that all threads about a2k could be found, on the old site, right there in one listing in the top forum that was listed, top-center of the page. And now there's the able2know tag, but it's like sixteenth in a dense cloud of something like 100 tags in a box down on the left of the page.

Now I really like that we have so many tags there now in that box. But maybe it would be a good idea to separate out the top 10 (or 15 or 20) very most popular tags into a box of their own, above, in a bigger font? Like, these are the first standard options you might be looking for? And then the larger tag cloud with 30 or 50 or 80 or 100 more tags in a box below, looking like the current one.

I mean, maybe that was already in the planning anyway, but it might help?

@nimh,
As the 'help!' or 'able2know' tags are the most useful, especially to new folks, I wonder if we could sticky them to the top?

Cheers

@CalamityJane,
CJane - if you click on the ajooja link Robert provided - hover your cursor over the Amazon link - look at the bottom left of your screen - you should be able to see that code that provides the Amazon/A2K connection.
