While the subject of this thread closely resembles the remarks made against him, it is only fair to remember that there are several "long time' members who are guilty of exactly what you accuse this member of dong. However, they are usually protected by the "community" and excuses made for their poor behaviour.

Since I have joined this forum, I have seen innumerable instances of broken TOS (I may even be guilty of some myself). I would venture a guess that more people have simply chosen to leave the site than have been banned from it.

If members would make the choice to not respond to those who they deem to be outside of the social norm that they would accept, then they deserve to put up with garbage.

We no longer see locked threads. And, to be honest, it seems that the locking of a thread only brought more interest after it was unlocked. Which was usually very soon after the locking process had taken place.

Trolls only survive by the retorts of the very people who rant about trolls. Don't feed 'em people.

If you think a public lynching is the way to handle moderation then I'll give you all the consideration you are due.

DrewDad wrote:

Oh, please. If you're not enforcing the TOS, then step up and admit it.

I've been pretty clear about what the changes are and will be. It doesn't amount to not enforcing the TOS, it amounts to a change in the way it's enforced.

I do think there is a lot more that can be communicated in this regard and do plan to do it as the site launches.

Kind of like the transition from a local community to a consumer society...

And it very well might be in Craven's interest to do that, however all need to be aware that the community is thus being destroyed because community is not what is wanted in this space.

Some people say you are the death of this community, you say the changes are. Wanna know something? The death of this community has been regularly heralded since about one year into its existence.

I posit that the people who do so undertake to speak for everyone when they simply do not.

But keeping up the moderation there was before even while the site keeps growing, let alone stepping it up to local-community type social control, would just require a lot of moderators. And right now you have a couple of hard-working volunteers with lives of their own who can only do so much. So unless we'd all start paying so they can hire an appropriate division of policing moderators, tant pis.

(And the irony of course is that if there were strict community policing in place, I'm guessing you'd be one of the first posters to be kicked out.)

nimh has it on the head. And it sometimes seems moderators die faster than we can replace them too these days.

Bullshit. This community is very important to me. I simply don't share your take on its downfall. It's stronger than you and it's stronger than me.

Some of ya'll sound like old farts afraid of change.

After two years of having a cell phone (one of those old ones that really is just a cell phone) I finally learned how to check my voicemail.

If I can do it, so can you all. We old dogs CAN learn new tricks and I'm sure it's gonna end up being really cool. I trust Craven and the others making the changes to not only know what they are doing, but to also be cutting edge.

BTW, Ogionik ... I can't stand him. His posts suck. His avatar looks like he's been hit by a truck and his communication skills bear that possibility out.

THERE! Ya happy, Ogionik? Twisted Evil

I didn't say you don't think the community aspect is important, I said you've indicated, in the past, that the community is not the primary focus of the site. Perhaps the focus has changed.

Nor did I indicate that I believe the downfall of the site/community is imminent.

What I said is that I, for one, want to know what the standards of behvior are.

Jespah publicly reprimanded cjhsa and me recently. I'm not bothered by the reprimand per se, but by what I perceive to be a double standard.

I think this is what is bothering the other folks as well.

This thread is quite a surprise. We are grown ups here and shouldn't need moderating. If you don't like someone or what someone has written, scroll on by, click out, whatever. Why should banning take place? Those who write offensive things will be dealt with by the community, as it usually does.

Any suggestion that this community is being ruined by a few bad apples is ludicrous. It will only happen if we let it.

There are a few people here who break the TOS on a regular basis. Some of the language is downright foul and some of the sentiments really nasty and repugnant, leaving me shaking my head that someone would actually advertise themselves that way. All I can do is try to avoid them and their posts, but I don't think they are 'ruining' the community.

APPLAUSE !!!

http://www.dudehisattva.com/applause.jpg

that's the great thing about a2k : we all can ignore anything that we don't agree with !
we can even make all kinds of rude noises and gestures at the "offender" - and probably gain great satisfaction from being so outspoken .
i don't think we need a quasi "police" to see if anyone dares step over the line .
it's always my privilege to ignore any posts and posters .
anyone being "sent to coventry" will be punished enough !

I think what you are talking about is when I said that the exchange of information was the stated mission of the site and that the stuff like word games is not. But I think I also stated that those kind of things keep some people around who then do exchange information.

But that's just me. To each his own. I no longer find the games interesting and would certainly start ignoring them but I'd also like to see others be able to use the site in a very different way.

If you didn't I apologize. Here's where I'm coming from: I know there is going to be a lot of unhappy folk when we launch the new site. Whether or not we actually changed the moderation it would be so and a bunch of people are going to claim that the new site sucks no matter whether it does or doesn't.

I expect to hear that the sky is falling and one of my coming tasks is to try to mitigate the rough spots in the transition. I do plan to communicate on all of this but this thread calling for banning a member is forcing my hand. This kind of public lynching is disgusting to me, and was never a part of the old moderation and I am in a bit of a bind trying to explain stuff with that angle and the fact that I was traveling when it started and did not have reliable internet access.

Give me some time. This is going to be a serious drain on my time when I tackle it but I will do it within the next two weeks.

I think I saw that, and I think you may be wrong about not being bothered by it. Thing is, you need to take that up with her. We have a policy against official public reprimands so that's a personal issue between you guys. I know that personal anything from jespah or myself is a bit complex but it is what it is.

That complexity is a big part of why we can't do this very well in our current structure. Most of the sane folk want nothing to do with the job because of stuff like this.

I sure don't. My use of the site has been curbed a lot because of the demands of the social cost of running the site.

I think there are a lot of different things bothering different people in different ways.

Some here are on the lynching bandwagon only, others are against the stated changes, and so on and so forth and I don't think it helps that many of the concerns are framed as if they speak for everyone.

In any case, I would like to address the community issues separately and not on this lynching thread. I don't want to contribute to it anymore.

If you guys want to talk community can you guys start different threads on it? I really don't want to keep feeding this one, I find it disgusting.
