Have you heard about this?
It seems that some people are not content with just stealing your identity and your credit, now they're stealing your health care too.
Our paper reported today about people checking into hospitals using stolen insurance cards. In one case a drug addicted pregnant woman checked in, had a drug addicted baby, which she abandoned. The woman whose health insurance it actually was, was arrested and her children taken by CPS until the whole thing could be figured out.
And figuring it out is difficult because medical records are private.
In another case a man recieved medical treatment, didn't pay any of the co-pays and then died. The person who was really insured only found out about it when he tried to buy a house and found his credit had been ruined by the unpaid bills complicated by the fact that he was "dead".
The moral to this story is that if your wallet is stolen don't just tell your bank -- tell your insurance provider too!
A simple identity check (we just show our ID-card, besides that there are enough relevant data already stored on the chip of the insurance card) would help as well, I think.
This isn't something new. It's been going on for quite a while now. I know severalk people that have gotten "past due" notices from collection agencies for medical services they never recieved.
Con artists will con people out of anything they can... nothing is safe.
happens in ontario too . since many of our OHIP (health insurance) cards are not yet "chipped" , "borrowing" of the health card is rather easy .

Quote:A special-investigations unit is helping the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) curb the fraud and abuse that has been draining millions of health care dollars from the province. The government is taking a tougher line on foreigners who use friends' or relatives' OHIP cards, people who use misplaced, stolen or counterfeit cards, and on snowbirds who deliberately bend residency requirements as they try to hang on to medicare benefits.
