The Olympic Games in Beijing will start in a few weeks.
Perhaps a Fantasy Prediction Game will make them more fun.
We certainly had a lot on Athens 2004 and Torino 2006.
6 Simple Rules of the Game:
1. Every participant will choose a "team" of 15 national olympic teams (divided by gender in the case of the USA, China and Russia teams). The aggregate result of these national olympic teams will determine the winner, on the basis of 5 points for every gold medal, 3 points for every silver medal, and 1 point for every bronze medal.
2. The 15 national olympic teams must be chosen from 4 different pools, in which the nations have been divided according to their performance in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
3. Each participant must choose 2 olympic teams from Group A, 3 olympic teams from Group B, 5 olympic teams from Group C and 5 olympic teams from Group D (with encompasses all nations not in any of the former groups).
4. Since the USA, China and Russia Olympic Teams get the most medals, they will be divided in USA Male, USA Female, China Male, China Female, Russia Male, Russia Female. Any medal won by a mixed duo or team (equestrian team medals, for example), will count for both male and female teams.
5. The medal count will be based on the OIC count. That is, collective medals count as one.
6. All participants must enter their predictions before 10:00 a.m August 8, US CST (which is about when the opening ceremony is over).
Prizes:
Winner: Virtual GOLD Medal, and congratulations from every one.
Runner Up: Virtual SILVER Medal.
Third Place: Virtual BRONZE Medal.

Good luck to everyone.
I have no idea what you are talking about. No matter. I will, of course, play. Table tennis. That is going to be the biggie, right?
Sounds good.
I've not only watched Olympic events on t.v., I've served hot chocolate to Swedish Olympic sailors (during the 1976 summer Olympics).
I'm so in.
(like hot chocolate means anything - all I knew was that they wore Speedos at practice
)

GROUP, ehbeth, not GROPE.
2 from Group A, 3 from B, 5 from C and 5 from D. What countries are in D?
No tv as usual (I used to be an olympics addict, with the sound off during certain tv folks' jingo-time. Haven't paid attention except for the smog/heat question for runners, and the noise about Ms. Torres.
Of course, I'm in.

Every country not listed on A, B or C.
I see we don't have to give ourselves team names. I will anyway for my own amusement - The Dolphin-Kick Dogpaddlers. (Pay no attention.)
So am I correct that we don't have to name 5 countries from Group D?
Like Albania or Lithuania. Any medals won by athletes from countries not in Groups A-C will earn us all the same points. That doesn't seem to make sense, as we will all share equally in that largesse. So why have Group D?
I'll be the first one to put down my picks:
Group A:
Australia
China Women
Group B:
Cuba
France
South Korea
Group C:
Brazil
Belarus
Denmark
Ethiopia
Kenya
Group D:
Georgia
Jamaica
Mexico
Slovenia
Taiwan

No. You have to pick 5.
In fact, group D made the difference 4 years ago.
OK. We do have to pick 5 other countries. This will take some research.
So the WIFF's (Wrapped in Flying Flags) go for:
Group A: American Men (swimming and track/field)
Chinese Women (gymnastics)
Working on B, C, and D.
