UPDATE 1-Reid rejects Bush call to lift drilling moratorium
Mon Jul 14, 2008 8:31pm BST

WASHINGTON, July 14 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, on Monday rejected a call by U.S. President George W. Bush to lift a moratorium on offshore oil drilling.

Bush announced on Monday that he lifted the executive branch's restriction on offshore exploration, saying only Congress stood in the way of opening up America's untapped oil riches.

But Reid said oil companies should focus instead on drilling on much of the 68 million acres that they have leased but not used for exploration.

Asked, however, if he expected to have the votes to block legislation to lift the moratorium in face of soaring gasoline prices, Reid told a news conferences, "We will have to wait and see."

Reid said he hoped to have legislation introduced this week to crack down on oil speculators.

On the other side of the Capitol, Rep. Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, mocked Bush's call earlier in the day to lift the ban.

"The Bush oil policy is an attempt at mass deception by a White House that has, for the last seven and a half years, pursued Big Oil's agenda of drill, drill, drill," Markey, chairman of a select House of Representatives committee on energy independence, told a news conference.

"Drill, drill, drill has failed, failed, failed," Markey said. "It has failed to make America energy independent. It has failed to prevent rising prices at the pump." (Reporting by Thomas Ferraro; Editing by Russell Blinch and Christian Wiessner)

The $64,000 question is what could the envirowhacks possibly be bringing to the dem table to justify this much grief?? I mean, any normal person in Reid's positoin would have to tell them to screw off.

Drilling hasn't "failed"; it hasn't been PERMITTED for the last 30 years.

What HAS FAILED is the kumbayah **** approach of the dems which has now had thirty years in which to replace all of the evil Gaia-hateful technologies of the past with windmills and solar panels, and it hasn't happened.

The dems are clearly the ones locked into an ideological vise on this one and when you vote for them or even fail to vote for pubbies, you're telling the world that you want to pay more for gasoline, heating oil, and natural gas, and deserve to pay more.

Right now there are something like 40 large jet aircraft engines pumping propane gas back into the ground on the Alaska oil fields. Enough to heat many if not most of the homes in the US and the dems and their Ewhack constituents will not allow us to have it.

This is for the greater glory of Gaia and it is a form of idolatry. In fact there is nothing in the Old Testament to indicate that anybody ever sacraficed an entire nation to an idol, this is new.

The democrats dream of increasing members in both the House and Senate may be shattered by their opposition to increased drilling. Apparently the will of the people is meaningless to our elected dictators.

One points out that the presence of a ban on offshore drilling is clear evidence that we don't actually have a "drill, drill, drill" policy. What we have is a "don't drill, don't drill, don't drill" policy...

but, according to his bio, he's a long time oil man, working it in texas since the fifties.

and according to his tv ad, he's also a life long REPUBLICAN.

maybe, he's one of those rare individuals that can view things through non-partisan glasses on occassion.

maybe he's just logical. and logic dictates that you shouldn't **** where you eat.

and so far, humans that aren't in the space shuttle or the iss eat on planet earth.

i can understand a little skepticism on global warming, but screwing up the food chain is pretty illogical.

humans may be at the top of the food chain, but without alla the other critters, all the way to the bottom of the chain, we aren't gonna be in such great shape.

What we have is a starve, starve, starve and die, die, die policy. The basic idea is to reduce the planet'e human population to medieval levels for the greater glory of Gaia.

Aren't demoKKKrats cool??

What we have is a bunch of socialists in control of Congress with a big D in front of their names. They wouldn't understand capitalism if it bit them in the ass. We needed to start drilling a long time ago. We need to drill now. Work out a compromise. Maybe a reprieve for the west coast if they at least give up ANWR. It's ridiculous - they're idiots.
