I would like to know if anyone out there has had SLT "Selective Lazer Trabeculoplasty ? My Opthamologist wants to perform the surgery on my eyes, I have Glaucoma and apparently this procedure is done when the eye drops do not work very well. but I want more information from patients who have had the procedure done, and any comments Pros and cons. I work in the Medical field, and know that sometimes Doctors Recomendations are based on kick backs or more money from Insurance companies and not on whats best for the Patient....
This procedure selectively targets the pigmented trabecular meshwork cells of the eye. The outflow of aqueous humor is then enhanced and the IOP is lowered.
It is critical to lower the IOP to prevent damage to the head of the optic nerve in order to prevent loss of your vision.
If you're in the Boston area, the Mass Eye and Ear probably performs this surgery. If you're a diabetic, this procedure may also be performed at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic in Boston.
The procedure is fairly common and is also safe.
If I were you, I'd trust my opthalmologist and respect his/her opionion concerning the use of this procedure.
I'm sure all will go well for you during this procedure.
