Gautam, Thanks, but I think there will be too many busy-bodies this holiday season to make it a rousing success. Maybe next year. ci

I wish I could join Gautam for a holiday celebration, even if it were just for one evening. A visit to London would be nice -- I've always wanted to go to the Christmas shows, the ones that only go for a week or two -- what are they called? Then, I think I'd do some last minute shopping and head north for a festive holiday up in the snows of Scotland. Now wouldn't that be a fine time?

Piffka, I was in Borders yesterday and looked at calendars. There was a particularly good big one with excellent photographs, on Scotland...

Oss, you come too, OK? We'll rent a huge cottage on some Loch and have a big party.

What's all this "cold at Christmas" malarkey???

It'd be too cold on the beach, and the mangoes wouldn't be ripe! You mean some people like it that way!
Sheeesh!

The Aussies complain that we win ugly. Now we win beautiful they complain about that too. There's no pleasing some people. [tip for Aussies..try to get a team together capable of disrupting Englands game on the pitch, instead of in bed]
Most impressed with Jacques Chiraq's comment "A great win for European rugby" Laughing Just as I predicted, the markets went up 60 points today.

90.64 points here in Germany (=2.6%) - that's obviously the late reaction to the women world championship in football

Okay, Osso... London first (to shop) then Scotland for Christmas, and Ireland for New Year's. How does that sound?

Margo -- Malarkey is practically my middle name, I grew up on it.

We only complained about you winning, because we're not used to losing! Australians have been pretty unanimous that it was just a great game. We made you change to our style of play and then you beat us at it! Even if only in the last 30 seconds of extra time - and by an unbelievable (and decorative) kicker! Hell - at one stage you even scored a try. A TRY! Imagine that!? England scored a try! An infinitely superior game compared to the England and France game.

Something to ponder: The Wallabies have had an awful year - almost a new team, and have been beaten by just about everyone leading up to the Cup! The English have had their best year ever. What would the result have been if the Wallabies were on form!? Razz

Bring on the Spaniards - Davis Cup final this weekend.

Bring on the Indians - touring for one day and test cricket!

And the cricketing Aussies - world champions in both forms of the game -are in England next year!

As the generally - sports-disinterested dlowan said elsewhwere - we fight above our weight in most sports we play! All this and still not 20 million people.

osso, My interest in sports events have also been deminished during the past couple of years. I think the reason might be that watching the local professional teams are just too painful to watch compared to the glory days of both the 49ers and the Raiders. My wife is still a devoted fan, and watches most of their games on tv. I might sneak a peak now and then, but it gets fewer attention from me. I don't even know the names of most of the players. Gotten pretty bad. Wink

I lived in LA but I was never a Rams or Dodgers fan.
Loved the 49ers for years and the Raiders in different places. When I left in '99, my Venice next door neighbor was an art director for movies, and a startling persona himself, being very heavily tattooed and punky, and sort of right wing, in comparison to moi. He and his wife have a wonderful rather giant white pit bull (I am usually wary there) with a leg missing, and they were Compleat 49'ers fans. I miss them, dammit.

Piffka, pantomimes or pantos, we call the Christmas plays.
They are sometimes very good. For children of all ages.

Steve, you can't say things like "we won beautiful" on a London thread. Think of Her Majesty's English, like what she is wrote. It should be "We won great", of course.

We watched the rugby match in a pub in Edinburgh, and the atmosphere was marvellous. there was a "Walkabout" Aus bar, but too many people crowding in, so we went nearby, to another pub, and there was about 30% Aussies, 40% English, 30% assorted and Jocks in there.
(I cheered as loudly as anyone when Jason Robinson scored his try!)

Then we went up to St Andrews and had a look round there. His Highness the Prince William was not in the souvenir shop, nor anywhere else about, though Mrs McTag had a good root round.
