Probably a silly question. The context is:

During the early 2000s accounting firm scandals, some may ask "where was the board of directors?".

The answer was often,"In management's back pocket".

I googled "back pocket" to find it a defense position of football. What is the more original meaning?(pocket on the back of the car seat? pocket at the rear end ? :-)

In this context, does it mean under the cover/protection of (the management)?

Thanks!

In this case it means that the management had the board "where it wanted them/ under their control".....as in where we put our cash out of sight but easily accessible.

Remember, many Western men carry their billfolds in their back pockets.
