Thoughts on the Floods

Where are all of the Hollywood celebrities holding telethons asking for
help in restoring Iowa and helping the folks affected by the floods?

Where is all the media asking the tough questions about why the federal
government hasn't solved the problem? Asking where the FEMA trucks and
trailers are?

Why isn't the Federal Government relocating Iowa people to free hotels
in Chicago?

When will Spike Lee say that the Federal Government blew up the levees
that failed in Des Moines?

Where are Sean Penn and the Dixie Chicks?

Where are all the looters?

Where is the hysterical 24/7 media coverage complete with reports of
cannibalism and shooting at helicopters? (which never happened in N.O.
either, BTW)

Where are the people declaring that George Bush hates rural people?

How come in 2 weeks, you will never hear about the Iowa flooding ever
again?

And notice they done try to confiscate the firearms of these rural
people, who will most likely wont tolerate that and will shoot back.

Just wondering....

I kinda like this quote:
"And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
John F. Kennedy"

The flooding is bad her, but it's not Katrina. You know, cj. I used to like you.

So, Cedar Rapids is under 10' of water and "it's not Katrina"?

I don't get it.

These are the people descended from those that made this country a world power. Rugged individualists, I'd say.

Should we sum it up by just saying not everyone acts helpless in disasters?

I don't think you where implying that the 10' of water was the issue. Everyone knows there are mostly white people in Iowa. New Orleans has a high percentage of African-Americans. Now, isn't that what you are trying to imply? That somehow we have more civilized people in Iowa?

I think there are some similarities in the circumstances. Yes, there was flooding, but a lot was learned from Katrina. Also, Iowa floods. We are used to it. This flood was more intense, but the process is the same. I don't think that takes away from the tragedy that was Katrina. There was certainly plenty of blame to go around in N.O. The evacuation was handled very badly.

I thought the big issue and complaints about the government and FEMA was more around evacuting (or lack thereof) people rather than flooding itself.

It doesn't appear as if people in Iowa are having difficulty being evacuted when needed. It doesn't appear as if thousands of people are being kept in a stadium with little or no assistance.

It seems that you have a theory. Care to spell it out or will you just keep bravely hinting?

Which part?

This is important.

I noticed nobody has really addressed the issues put forth.

cjhsa, are you familiar with the topography of Cedar Rapids as compared to that of New Orleans?

Would you say it would be easier to walk across a field of clover or trudge through a snake-infested swamp?

No it isn't. You made the claim that Iowa is different because it is a red state. You didn't say that Iowa is different because some parts of Iowa are red. If you had, you would have been making a different argument and I would not have responded as I did. But you didn't make that argument.

If you're making that argument now, then we need to look at what parts of Iowa are red and compare that to the parts of Iowa that are underwater. That's not easy, because Iowa has experienced flooding in a number of different places -- but then so did Louisiana. The hardest hit city, however, is probably Cedar Rapids. Looking at the 2004 presidential election, we see that Linn County, where Cedar Rapids is located, voted 55%-45% in favor of John Kerry. That makes Linn County a blue county, and so Cedar Rapids, the largest city in Linn County, is presumably a blue city.

On that basis, therefore, there is nothing to distinguish blue underwater New Orleans from blue underwater Cedar Rapids. Wanna' try again?
