McG, You wouldn't understand what the following article is talking about, but it's not the increase in the minimum wage that has caused all of our current economic problems; a reason why your brains is unable to boggle.

Rising prices beat down consumer spending in June

By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer 1 hour, 15 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Consumer spending, after adjusting for inflation, fell in June as shoppers were hit with the biggest increase in prices in nearly three decades.

The Commerce Department reported Monday that consumer spending dipped by 0.2 percent in June, after removing the effects of higher prices, the poorest showing since a similar drop in February. The higher prices reflected a big surge in gasoline costs and helped to drive an inflation gauge tied to consumer spending up by 0.8 percent in June, the biggest increase since a 1 percent rise in February 1981.

The big rise in inflation ate up a part of the billions of dollars in stimulus payments delivered during the month. Personal incomes rose by a tiny 0.1 percent in June following a giant 1.8 percent increase in May.

No kidding.

They raised the minimum wage and then cried foul when unemployment numbers went like it was Bush's fault. It really boggles the mind how anyone could support the Democratic party.

When did the rate increase take effect that you think caused the rise in unemployment?

Unemployment rate
March 2008 - 5.1
April - 5.0
May - 5.5
June - 5.5
July - 5.7
August - Not listed yet.

Effective date of latest rate increase in minimum wage - July 24, 2008.

I think a lot of things boggle your mind McG.

Well, employers knew well in advance of the 70-cent/hour increase in the mimimum wage. I'm quite sure they acted accordingly and in advance.

Right, right. I'm sure the huge layoffs due to businesses folding and our auto industry tanking has nothing to do with it, but that extra dollar an hour, wow, disaster!

Glad you recognize the truth Cyc.

They raised it in 2007 as well and unemployment rates have been pretty steadily going up. I am sure there are other factors, but the 2 are not exclusive as to cause and effect.

Odd, the unemployment rates stayed pretty steady through 2007 and didn't start going up until 2008, per my data; do you have a chart or something showing that?

I love how you guys shrug off the financial crisis our country is under, and blame the giving of a few more dollars to the worst-paid employees as the reason for rising unemployment. Now, you have no actual proof, but does that even matter to you?

Yet you refuse to read complete posts.

Can you refute that minimum wage has gone up and so has unemployment? Can you point to any single cause for increasing unemployment? I know I can't.

I did not state that raising the minimum wage as the reason for rising unemployment, you said that or interpreted that or reasoned that or whatever.

I do know that since the Dems took control of congress that the country went straight to hell with a rather quick tempo. But I am sure you can blame it all on Bush and the Republicans somehow. Rolling Eyes

You will ignore all the deficiencies from the Democratic party because you are a Democratic wonk. That's the game you play just as I play as Republican wonk. No shame in admitting the truth Cyc., we already know.

It is pretty substantial when you look at it from a % increase. I don't get raises anywhere near that big.

History will treat GW kindly for the following reasons.

We are fighting a sophisticated enemy that has no rules of engagement to live buy other than find ways to fu*k with us and kill us in large numbers.
They know our rules of engagement and laws better than we do or once did and they use this knowledge against us.

Admit that the attacks on this country on Sept. 11 were well planned and highly successful and you
get a better picture of the threat we face and the huge lack of security measures we had in place.

We need to react very fast to every single possible threat and be ready to re adapt again and again very quickly.

I don't see any problem with what Bush has done to protect this country, my country, from any additional attacks since 09/11.
I hope we are able to do more and actually get a step or two ahead of the growing threat.

The "growing threat" is only in your brains. Bush diverted the "real" war from Afghanistan to Iraq and Saddam who never posed a threat to us. We lost 3,000 on 9-11, and over 4,000 on our war in Iraq - and still counting.

Most everybody including McCain said the war in Iraq was handled with incompetence. He now wants to continue the Bush war in Iraq into the future with no commitment to a time-frame.

Believe it or not, we don't have the military to fight both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and the cost of 2.7 billion every week while our country goes into recession.

As for our country being attacked, it's only a matter of time, but there are many handicaps for those who wish to do harm to us. It's not that easy to get flights without a passport and VISA to most parts of this world - the US has one of the most restrictive VISA application process.

It's more likely that we'll have more deaths from auto accidents and American citizens killing Americans.

Your reality of "fear" is in your own brain, while most Americans go about their "normal" daily lives.

Most Americans now fear losing their jobs, their homes, and their inability to pay for the higher cost of fuel and food.

The "clue" you speak of is quite evident; it's very difficult for anybody - especially terrorists - to get a VISA to come to the US. Can't board a plane or boat without it.

Hello! Have you ever tried to fly into the US or any country in the world without your passport?
