this would be a bit better

"what made them have the guts to do as they did"

grammatically correct are:

what caused them to have the guts to do as they did?
or
what made them have the guts to do as they did?

another choice is "what gave them the guts to do what they did?" - then it's a slightly different style, moving out of the passive voice.
