Is throwing a ball at someone at work a CLM?

Because every company is getting stingier and stingier, we now sit in smaller and smaller hamster like cages. I happen to be the lucky recipient to sit in a "double cube" - woo-hoo for me. But, I sit in a spot where people like to gather. I frequently have to stare them down or tell them to shut the h*ll up - I honestly don't care about their weekend escapadesÂ…

Today some gumby is just standing right in front of my desk, not facing me, but leaning against the outside wall of my cube - the wall is about shoulder height. I stare at the gumby, but she is too stupid to realize she is interrupting my work (or my newest creation for A2K - depends on your viewpoint). I finally pick up this rubber ball and get ready to toss it at her head, unfortunately the friend she is waiting for arrives and they walk off.

What do you suggest for the impending interruptions?

Yes, I'd say that'd be a career limiting move.

They don't give office walls to those who throw balls.

I think I would just say, "Could you guys congregate elsewhere because you're disturbing my concentration?" or something along those lines. Or put a big plant where they stand...

They're probably just unaware of the inconvenience to you, linkat.

throwing the ball, while momentarily gratifying, would most likely lead to more trouble than it's worth.

can you be moved somewhere away from the main drag?
i had major issues working on a noisy floor a few years ago, asked to be moved, and eventually the entire dep't moved to another (quieter) floor...

You need to be a Sr VP to get an office now. I used to have an office, but most companies in my industry now you need to be very high up.

The big plant is not allowed - we actually asked for them to add a bit higher wall for this area as they have in a similar area as there is lots of traffic and stuff - the response - this is not company policy.

then they suggested to ask your manager to move - which moves costs money so that is not allowed by the company either.

I've also tried the nice approach - it works but only in the short term.

I have a reputation (rightly so) of being the b*tch. I guess because I work more than socialize. By the way most of these individuals are youngsters - I do know better than to throw the ball at some one that has authority over my career.

So are you self-limiting? Very high up seems like a good place to be.

Of course not - just that is a couple of levels for me right now. Bummer when you lose an office because the company is trying to squeeze more and more money by squeezing everyone into gerbil cages.

Thanks! I really like the air gun as you don't leave any evidence behind. And at 12.99 a real steal. I'll need to invest in it.

I have on occassion shot rubber bands at a neighbor that used to swear and be loud (he know works in another group). He never got mad because he knew that he was annoying.
