Would you vote for Jesus?

Depends on the really important question: Who would be First Lady?

How do we calculate Jesus' age? He was not 35 when he died, but does he get credit for time in heaven? I suppose we could consider him a citizen of the US when the Constitution was adopted, and presumably he was resident in at least one US house of worship for the last 14 years (I won't speculate on which one).

Electing Jesus would save taxpayers money since he would not need Secret Service protection or a presidential library since he never wrote anything down.

If Paul is running as his VP (unlikely, as they never met and had different ideologies), I would certainly not vote for Jesus. If Mary Magdalene was VP, probably.

I don't know how he would handle foreign policy. He was portrayed as a King sitting on a throne judging the entire world, which might offend some of our allies. Jesus said, "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." Sounds like a republican to me.

Franklin D. Roosevelt was president during World War II, Roosevelt was a Democrat.

President Harry S. Truman ordered the dropping of Atom Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to force the Japanese Emperor to surrender unconditionally to end World War II, Truman was a Democrat.

I don't know how you think I'm playing a game.

kicky asked a question, "Would you vote for Jesus"

My response is "I don't know, what would be his platform"

I trying to stick to the topic. I don't care if someone is trying to live their life by their individual interpretation of Jesus and the bible. I'm trying to figure out politically why Jesus would be a good candidate, or not.

I can't decide that unless I know what his stance on things would be.

To be honest, I don't particularly care what you, as Aidan thinks, but you said something at some point which was a launching pad for my musings. So don't answer, someone else might want to.

Am I the only one that doesn't know what he would stand for in his campaign?

I didn't mean that you were playing a game - I meant I didn't have time to play a long game of hypothetical theorizing- even though it might be interesting.

My first answer was the most honest. Although I think Jesus personified personal integrity that I respect and admire - I think he'd have been torn to shreds had he chosen to enter politics.

But I tend to like what he stood/ stands for...in general although I've never given the specifics (in terms of a political platform) any thought.

That's what I was referring to - in terms of a game I didn't have time to play. But maybe someone else would like to give it some thought - it might be interesting.

I would vote for Jesus because he would never start a war, he felt women deserved to be heard, he believed in feeding the poor and taking care of the sick. He was against big business (throw out the money lenders!) and he thought that you had to pay your taxes ("give unto Caesar what is Ceasar's") to make a society function peacefully. He also believed that the old ways were not always the best and should be challenged. All of which sounds very liberal to me. I would like Mary Magdalene to be his VP.

I think this website makes a good case for Jesus being a Liberal:

Jesus is (was) a Liberal

Plus you can buy a T-shirt:

I agree.

I don't think this is clear. The pharisees came to him and said, "Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar?"

Jesus held up a coin and asked them, "whose image is on the coin?." They replied, "Casear's." Jesus then said, "Pay to Casear what belongs to Casear and to God what belongs to God." I think he was basically saying that this issue (paying taxes to the government) was not something he was concerned with. Taxes were "Casear's things," nothing to do with him.

And remember that tax collectors back in Jesus' time were considered the worst sort of crooks. There are references to Jesus breaking bread with "theifs and .....tax collectors!" He obviously thought they needed saving. Cool

He also said that anyone who abused a child (i.e., pedophiles) should have a millstone tied around their neck and be thrown into the river. That doesn't sound like something the typical liberal would say.

I also don't think Jesus would agree with the secularist viewpoint of most liberals today.

This is why I still say I think it is impossible to fit him into the categories of liberal or conservative.

Chum,

Yes. Hitler and Jesus had very similar qualities. Both political geniuses, both excellent speakers, both used religion as a tool...

There is a saying that goes "Religion is true for the common, false for the wise, and a tool for the leaders."

Chai,

Oh of course - I never denied that. Just because Jesus existed doesn't mean he was the son of God, however.

jesus was a good communist like Karl marx.
I have no inhibitions to uphold his original thoughts.
But i hate jesus as a Christmas commercial product.
And I will never vote Jesus or his organized religious groups if his preachings were interpreted with flowery philosophydevoid of logic.

My personal view on Jesus is that he was a genius, intent upon changing his world. He saw problem's with the mainstream religion - corruption, pointless rituals, immorality - so he posed as the son of God to change it. Little did he know that his actions would only lead to the birth of another religion, just with some different faults.

It depends. How does Jesus feel about the separation of church and state? If he can't swear to defend the constitution then he can't be president.

(sorry I can't answer the core of your question; I'm not a conservative or a liberal)

Hitler, however, was a socialist. (Nazi = National Socialist Party).

So if Hitler came back today and ran against McCain, would you vote for him? If not, how do you reconcile that with your liberal political ideas?

Hitler and the National Socialist Party were as "socialist" as the German Democratic Republic was "democratic."

Hitler was an authoritarian that allowed corporations to work within the free enterprise system to advance the ends of the state. That is not socialism.
