AFL-CIO Head Announces Formation of New National Union
The Associated Press
DETROIT (AP) - AFL-CIO President John Sweeney announced the formation of a new national union geared for workers currently not represented by labor groups.
Unlike other labor unions, Working America will not have bargaining power.
Instead, its focus will be on bringing together workers from various industries not grouped by existing labor unions and to promote awareness on the national, state and local level about issues such as jobs, health care and education.
"In the face of the most anti-worker administration in decades, America's workers are struggling to get a leg up on this economy - and many are trying to form union," Sweeney said at a Labor Day speech.
Sweeney was to formally make the announcement at an address Wednesday at the Detroit Economic Club.
