Why did Obama stay in Rev. Wright's church?

I'd have to agree with you, Freeduck. Unfortunately, I only saw excerpts but from what I did see, he appeared as a rational, reasoned, thinking human being, and I liked how he presented himself and his views. It leads me to conclude that the original comments were taken out of context and blown up, obviously deliberately. A rather transparent smear campaign.

Hey Mame, that's interesting. We dont hear from you all that often on the Politics forum, and I'm really kind of reassured to read this take of yours.

Sorry, nimh, I was out all day, so I just saw this. I don't enter the politics forum - well, I do to read opinions, but I rarely comment because I don't have the time or inclination to follow all the ins and outs of what's going on. Much of what I read here is not worth a whole lot, ie. "Obama is great" and "Obama is ****" and"Hilary is great" and "Hilary is ****".

It seemed to me from watching those clips, though, that the Pastor had been misrepresented in a slightly diabolical way. Curious as to why you'd feel reassured about my take on this.

Oh because, like you say, most people posting on Politics are pretty rabid partisans. You usually know what they are going to think about something, and so with the Obama/Wright thing too, it was mostly a question of the usual suspects on either side (or on the three sides, counting Hillary supporters). You seem like a pretty neutral observer on the other hand, not particularly invested in one or the other candidate. So that you had the kind of reaction to this that an Obama sympathiser like me would be hoping for is reassuring.

Ahhh... well, I am non-partisan, obviously, and I should think there are many other like-minded people out there who can recognize a smear when they see it.

Nah, it seems that all the people who love to recite the Holocaust Memorial Museum's inscription of Pastor Martin Niemöller's poem have suddenly lost their voices.

Quote:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.

And all those people who valiantly cheer on the military because they defend our rights and freedoms have forgotten what those rights and freedoms are.

Quote:
First Amendment - Establishment Clause, Free Exercise Clause; freedom of speech, of the press, and of assembly; right to petition
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Beyond Parody

29 Apr 2008

From Fox News' website yesterday:

Obama Rejects Wright Comments Says pastor doesn't speak for him, campaign Democratic presidential candidate puts distance between his campaign and pastor's latest statements Special Report w/ Brit Hume: Fact-checking one of the claims made by Rev. Jeremiah Wright The O'Reilly Factor: The comeback of Rev. Jeremiah Wright Hannity & Colmes: Huckabee's Take Former GOP presidential candidate weighs in on Rev. Wright; McCain's campaign VIDEO: FOX News contributor Michael Steele on the message of Rev. Wright's media tour OPINIONS: Susan Estrich: Who Needs Friends Like the Rev. Wright? John Moody: Memo to Rev. Wright: Do Souls Have Colors? On the Record w/ Greta: Deadly Shark Attack Expert explains what led to Great White's attack on swimmer

The shark story is what makes it all worthwhile.

That's about right - when it comes to an opportunity to score partisan points, Fox News instantly loses all sense of proportion. This must be the kind of wall-to-wall coverage that's normally reserved for elections or natural disasters.

Like someone said, when it's election year Fox News basically performs as the media arm of the Republican Party.

Cool What does Obama's religion, pastor, etc., have to do with anything? I don't see Hillary or McCain, having to go through this God test!

The question should be: Does McCain or Hillary believe in God and if so, why doesn't she wear a flag lapel pin or McCain? Neither one wears one, either, yet Obama has to pass through the "eye" of a needle, walk on water and defy gravity! Cool Call it what it is, PREJUDICE!

I like this one, "Bill Clinton, after waxing poetic on the friendship between Hillary and John McCain despite their differences on the issues: It'd be a great thing if we had an election where you had two people who love this country, who were devoted to the interest of the country and people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues instead of all this other stuff which always seems to intrude on our politics." link
