@Thomas,
mata hari? wha? where?
my name means mata hari in indonesian, but otherwise i've seen no other mata hari here.

meanwhile, i got a hotel for the first two nights, and have lined up 4 apartments to go look at in the first 2 days. maybe i will have a place to live after all.

@dagmaraka,
Wondering about UPS and DHL (maybe Fed Ex, dunno). I've sent huge paintings through Fed Ex choosing the slowest option. I suppose they're all expensive but maybe they have some helpful info re boat shipping folks.

When I moved to sand town I sent 23 boxes (12" cubes) by media mail, which I know isn't right for you, Dag, but what about the plain old US postal service?

I suppose you've checked all that. Never mind...

Hmm, here's a link that looks like they'll ship smaller amounts by sea...

@dagmaraka,
Dag, I occasionally get wrangled into international shipping, and have found USPS to be the best option for $$. (parcel post is slow, but effective)

Don't know the size limits, but I could investigate a bit if I have time today.

You might talk to in import / export business near you, I know there are private companies splitting containers internationally. I have a friend that buys from China, but no insight...

USPS does not ship stuff by boat anymore. Media mail does not exist, at least not internationally. They were losing money, so they got rid of it. That about triples my costs in comparison to what I estimated...but what can I do.

@dagmaraka,
Have you called some commercial freight carriers, they might have some room

@dagmaraka,
Did you look at the cheapo site I posted? Not that I think it is any better, just wondering. I'm still reeling from my very early 2006 moving costs.

Who was it, Thomas?, who mentioned possibly parcelling out stuff to parcel? (paraphrasing..). Not to put it on your room mates, but various friends.

Not that they'd pay, you would pay the postage, but smaller boxes at a time from the local whatever.

@ossobuco,
I called a number of freight companies, I'd have to have a lot more stuff...nobody's interested in my 6 boxes of books and clothing...I'm not shipping any furniture or anything big. And I have no time, so USPS it is.

@dlowan,
i have a long day at work. coworker and i agreed that we'll work from morning till evening to get as much done as possible, but it's 10:30 and she's not here....grrr. i am not feeling anything right now. kinda numb, vaguely irritated with work stuff, but the reality of moving is not hitting me yet. i think it will tomorrow.

Dunno -- your new avatar looks a bit like a film star of the 1930s, and Greta Garbo's Mata Hari was the first who came to mind. And now that you say "dagmaraka" means "Mata Hari" in translation, it seems the association wasn't so bad ....

Sorry to see you go. Travel safely, and come back some day.

Speaking of which: Two weeks ago, when I met Joe Nation at the frying pan, he asked me to relay a message when I go to Boston. Once you're done in Den Haag, Joe said, he wants you to move to New York City. I have you that in writing now, because I didn't make it to Boston. And needless to say, I second Joe's request.
