I'm not a native English speaker but I've seen this construction for a long time.

You can find many examples on the internet, like this one you can use about trains:

Sure, but it is an opinion.

I do think otherwise, trains (railroads) are not at all useless..

Francis is right . . . "apart from" is a common and acceptable English usage.

Rules of grammar don't have any requirement that the idea being experessed be of a positive nature. There is nothing wrong with expressing a negative idea.
