I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and respect to the 68th High Priest Nichinyo Shonin for his great compassion in travelling a long distance to conduct this enshrinement ceremony.
Is the sentence correct and, if so, is 'to' the correct preposition?
Should it be ' ... express heartfelt gratitude to and respect for ...?
Many thanks.
The sentence is fine if it is addressed to the 68th High Priest, to whom the speaker is expressing gratitude and respect.

This would be appropriate if your speech is addressed to the audience, to whom you are describing your gratitude to and respect for the 68th High Priest.
Hi Contrex
I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation for your guiding me all the time.
Why did you use the word "compassion"?
Hi Sullyfish
What word/s would you use in place of 'compassion'?
Many thanks.
To feel compassion means to share another person's pain or suffering. Admirable though the quality is, "compassion" is not an exact synonym of "kindness", which might be a better choice.
Hi Contrex
I agree with your explanation.
Many thanks.
If, for example, he travelled a long way, you would admire his courage or his commitment to make the journey.
