That's what I was going to say. Well, with a slight variation -- if my kid wants to talk to me via text messaging, she can make her meaning plain.

I don't necessarily begrudge the "secret language" aspect of it -- kids can talk to each other that way, I don't care. That's always been the point (making adults furrow their brows and say "huh...???") If we old fogeys master txtspk, they'll come up with something else.

Weirdly, I was at the very forefront of text abbreviations and stuff btw, with tty's (teletypewriters/ telephone devices for the deaf). I'm talking late 80's. I remember teaching an ASL class in the early 90's in which I provided a list of commonly used tty abbreviations (and emoticons, before there was such a word) and everyone thought it was so funny. Now most of those are standard. (See "btw," above.)
