fm-

Well it wasn't obvious to me before I read it and it hasn't been obvious to anybody I have ever discussed it with and some of them were pretty bigshots in the academic world.Wright Mills goes to some lengths to praise the work and also to criticise it from the social function point of view.I've forgotten what Hofstadter said but it was an expression of high admiration and there are many others in a similar vein.I think SDers would benefit from reading Wright Mills's critique of Veblen who was anything but a "cheesehead".

Obviously the book, read cynically, has great value for an entrepreneur in understanding the market in female dress and ornament.

But personally it must have saved me a fortune and rendered me immune to all advertising and also enabling me to enjoy commercial breaks.

BTW-Footballer's Wives begins a new series tomorrow night (will you say those lovely things you said tonight?) with Joan Collins starring.Unmissable.Would have killed Veblen. You should have seen the jewelry party scene in the last series when the lads were abroad playing a big match.Tops Dick van Dyke and that's saying something.

There might be a misunderstanding though. In a nutshell what was it exactly you thought obvious.

Thanks Farmerman. I didn't know you were a geologist........sorry. I should have been paying better attention. I wish I knew more about gems, and I am learning.

Yesterday I leased a store front. It's small and cozy and of the neighborhood. It's only one block down the street from my apartment. Bernie is there now getting ready to paint fix the place up. We'be been out all day shopping for necessary furniture and materials for display. So we're really busy. But we're excited. This will be fun.

Now Spendi.......does this mean you want to discourage me from jewelry design as a method of making money? I know, I dislike the business part as well. But I have to do something to make a living, dearie. My money won't last forever, you know.

So I guess this means you decided not to go to Vancouver after all, hmm?

I've wondered...are you still seeing patients/clients in NYC? (I never know which to call them...it varies around here.)

Not in the least.I only discourage women from spending my money. The more other men are fleeced the better because it renders me relatively wealthier.

But the market you have chosen is very competitive and you need to be good to even hold your chin above the water and in that business good tends to go with originality and daring.Something pushing at the boundaries of acceptability.Ankle chains say like Salammbo wore.
Whips with jewelled handles.Aphro charms from Tibet.Lapis Lazuli type stuff.Moonstones.

Anyway-best of luck.

Lola, just saw the beautiful jewelry designs! They are all lovely!

Have you gotten a website yet? Brochures?

Gosh, how exciting!

Have you joined a professional group yet? Great contacts there.

Girl, I wish you all the luck with your new business. Just hang in there and keep working! Smile

Minimal adornment is actually very beneficial.......income-wise. There are many women, and not all young that don't like big jewelry. So Bernie designed a small, minimalist necklace that is doing very well, sales-wise. Yes, Bernie is designing jewelry, and very successfully now too. But don't tell him I told you because every time he admits it, he worries about his sperm count going down. Silly man........I mean owner. laugh

Tell Bernie that I've been painting for the last seven years and my sperm count has been unaffected. Hmmm, could that have something to do with my vasectomy? Great to have you back. I hope you are also enjoy the business. Sounds like a creative (as well as business) endeavor.

Lola,

Interesting that Blatham designed a successful necklace. Didn't you say this was his first real job? Smile

Lola!

Seems like forever since I've run into you around here. Glad to know things are still going well for you two.

I'd love to see a picture of B's necklace, if you have one. (I bet the others would like to see it, too.)

Happy 4th!
