A luminous glow rose towards the East;far below the first stirrings of the sleeping city began to shriek a greeting to the day.The roofs and walls of the rectangular temples, the balconies, the tiny gardens and glazed windows were being carved by degrees upon the paleness of the dawn. Then as the rosy sky grew larger, the lofty towers, bending over the sloping soil, reared and massed themselves like a herd of elephants coming down to the watering hole. The streets lengthened and the beacons in the river began to grow pale. The children of Mammon, feeling that the light was coming, stretched and yawned and placed their hands on the railing and sang towards the sun.
It appeared and Lola raised her arms and like a phantom in the clouds cried,

"I'm 59 today!"

Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday to you,
Happy birthday dear Lola,
Happy birthday to You.

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young.
Forever young,forever young
May you stay forever young.

And to do it justice play a live 1981 recording.

Have a nice day and best wishes from England.

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday Lady Lola
Happy Birthday to you

The best I can wish you is love!

I dedicate one of my songs to you on this your day.

Love Calls You By Your Name

You thought that it could never happen
to all the people that you became,
your body lost in legend, the beast so very tame.
But here, right here,
between the birthmark and the stain,
between the ocean and your open vein,
between the snowman and the rain,
once again, once again,
love calls you by your name.

The women in your scrapbook
whom you still praise and blame,
you say they chained you to your fingernails
and you climb the halls of fame.
Oh but here, right here,
between the peanuts and the cage,
between the darkness and the stage,
between the hour and the age,
once again, once again,
love calls you by your name.

Shouldering your loneliness
like a gun that you will not learn to aim,
you stumble into this movie house,
then you climb, you climb into the frame.
Yes, and here, right here
between the moonlight and the lane,
between the tunnel and the train,
between the victim and his stain,
once again, once again,
love calls you by your name.

Lola,

Happy Birthday! I am not a poet. I did write an original haiku almost 40 years ago in high school. But enough talk about me. I hope your birthday is the start of another great year for you.

(Here is the haiku anyway:
the wicked winter leaves
and all nature is reborn
in the soft spring)

Yes you are getting older, I might add that due to gravity you are also getting shorter.

I've arranged something special for your birthday, Lola.

A private showing, just for you.

Prince Michael will be arriving at your apartment at precisely 6 p.m. along with seven Brinks trucks and a dozen specially trained armed guards. They will stay until 7.

Feel free to try on all the pieces. All at once, if you like. I want you to feel like a QUEEN on your birthday.

Love,

Eva

Aw shucks......golly gee it is my 59th birthday and everyone is being so nice...........the crown fits well Eva, maybe I can talk Prince Michael into staying around for the next 59 years...........even though Walter is being a bit optimistic, still I do believe in science, so maybe. The place looks cleaner today than it did when Dylan, young then and smart-alecky beyond his years, sat at this very table by the door and played chess after hours........well it wasn't very clean then either.

Angelique you brought Cohen.......so, now that I think of it, Prince Michael can go, but maybe he'll leave the jewels. This crown fits so well on my little head, it makes up for the ever growing shortness.......mr smart ass Dys. Love you and your shorter body, bald head. When love calls me by my name, I always answer.

And a haiku to you too, Wande. Very sweet and well constructed, even if it is over 40 years old.

Lola is getting everything she wants right now, Letty.......poetic friends.

The bending temples and the children of mammon are stretching toward the sun........but it's hiding, surrounded by a thickness of grey, watery clouds. It's a wet fluffy sun today. The city, clean and no longer thirsty, is still my favorite home. It's the city of my youth....but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now. All the better to remain forever young. Kiss to you Spendi. You're being so sweet.

Francis, what I want for my birthday from you is a sighting of the other half of your face.

More later, I'm off to luncheon with my New York daughter and her Dad.........

george is yet to make his appearance. Perhaps he's gotten lost and then redeemed by his current reading material.......not likely for an old McCarthyite. You should be ashamed, george! It's a tribute to your beautiful, poetic side that I don't kick you hard in the bum for that naughty right-wing rendition of "Waltzing Nixon."

back later. Thanks y'all for your lovely birthday wishes.

Oh and Tico, I see you've arrived. Would you like to wear my crown for a few minutes? Thanks for the red birthday wishes. Red is so passionate......but look out, the left side of your brain will grow larger here and you may come out of the liberal closet and become a Democrat.

Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets
And little man, little Lola wants you
Make up your mind to have
(Make up you mind to have)
No regrets (no regrets)
Recline yourself
Resign yourself, you're through

I always get, what I aim for
And your heart and soul
Is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants (Lola wants)
Lola gets (Lola gets)
Take off your coat
Don't you know you can't win
You're no exception to the rule
I'm irresistible you fool .. give in
(Give in, you'll never win)

Whatever Lola wants
Lola gets

[Instrumental Interlude]

I always get, what I aim for
And your heart and soul
Is what I came for

Whatever Lola wants (Lola wants)
Lola gets (Lola gets)
Take off your coat
Don't you know, you can't win

You're no exception to the rule
I'm irresistible you fool ... give in
(Give in, you'll never win)

Give in (give in, you'll never win)
Give in (give in, you'll never win)
[/color]

thanks osso and mac.......a birthday is a mixed blessing like everything.

Beth, your song (or mine) reminds me of the Milton Bearle Show............."don't fight it Milton, it's bigger than both of us." Who remembers that line? Milton was always trying to lose that woman. Who was she? I wonder.

All I know is that had it not been for Lola I would be on some other trip than A2K.

Oh Lolola come closer
Close softly your watery eyes
The pangs of your sadness
Will pass as your senses will rise
And the flowers of the city
Tho' deathlike get breathlike at times......

Gee-I love To Ramona.I have seen Bob sing it a couple of times. It's like a blowtorch.

I can't believe anybody would think it just another romantic ballad in 3/4 time.

Lola,

I almost missed your birthday! I wish you all the best on your special day. You bring a spark to these threads, just as I'm sure you do to all those who meet you. I'm glad to call you a friend.

P.S. tell Blatham I have the damn book. I'm off to Washington in the morning for business and will read it on the plane: Thread to follow.
