There is NOTHING that Randy Newman has written which I don't like, but that song, sung by either gender, is certainly a special gem.

Agree wholeheartedly. Randy Newman's "Sail Away" is one of my all-time favorite albums. And I do love that song. It's one of his greats.

Lately I've been listening to another on that album/CD...Political Science. Seems particularly apropos, don't you think?

The PBS Newshour did a piece on Newman about two weeks past (you'll be able to find it on their site and watch it if you didnt see it).

One of the lovely touches was footage of a recent live performance where Newman was singing these lines from Political Science...

Now Asia's crowded
And Europe's too old.
Africa's far too hot,
And Canada's too cold.
And South America stole our name.
Let's drop the big one; there'll be no one left to blame us.

On the second line, 'europe's too old', he gives a wonderful knowing smile to the audience...an allusion, of course, to Rumsfeld's mad brain.

We all know that's not hair on the top of Rumsfeld's head -- it's live nerve ends.

(sigh) If only they would short-circuit...

Didn't know that about PBS Newshour, blatham. Am off to find it now...
See? I knew I couldn't be the only one that remembered that song.

For anyone looking in who's wondering...here are the complete lyrics.

POLITICAL SCIENCE
Randy Newman, 1969

No one likes us - I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money - But are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us - so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot and Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia (nod to deb Smile )
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin' too

Boom! goes London, and Boom! Paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world 'round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now

And when the hunger for your touch
Rises from the hunger,
You whisper, "you have loved enough,
Now let me be the lover."

I swept the marble chambers,
But you sent me down below.
You kept me from believing
Until you let me know:

That I am not the one who loves
It's love that chooses me.
When hatred with his package comes,
You forbid delivery.

And when the hunger for your touch
Rises from the hunger . . .

He has a bad case of split ends, Blath -- it's sending all sorts of mixed signals.

Political Science -- now there's a fascinating oxymoron.

And yes, Gautum, but......I've learned that from little pens, larger ones grow. That's the thing about those pens........ There's an old Texas saying, "It's not how deep the well is, it's how you swing the bucket."

And lw and blatham.......yes, Rumsfelt is unplugged. Q: What shall we do about it? A: We need to get rid of that loose cannon.

I feel like a moonlight swim. Is the pool outside heated? Do we HAFTA wear swimsuits?

(taking bottle of champagne from behind the bar, Eva saunters out the back door...)
