Is 'were' correctly used?

Reply Fri 22 Feb, 2008 08:55 pm
Have you searched 'univresity' under Google and were surprised to find so many hits?

Is 'were' ciorrectly used? Does the sentence need rephrasing?

Many thanks.

Just goes to show how many poor spellers (or poor typists) there are. "Ciorrectly"??? I'd say that proves the point. I'd be more inclined to say it was used corectly if the sentence read "...Google, and were you surprised..." It's understandable, I guess, as it stands, but it's pretty strange.

You need to add a word, Young Liat, if you wish the sentence to stay somewhat structured as you have it written.

Have you searched "university" under Google, and were you surprised to find so many hits?

Still somewhat awkward, but the second 'you' adds clarity.

Yes, add the word "you" after were, and run a spell checker.

Didn't I just say that, roger?

Looking back, I guess username could have scolded me in much the same way I scolded roger.

Life is a vicious circle, isn't it?

Speaking of vicious circles, allow me to point out that username also misspelled the word "correctly."

oh, well, you did indeed get me there. I didn't notice. Didn't even notice the second time I looked. However I plead poor typing. I'm a dynamite speller, just clumsy.

I still balk (earlier thread) at misspell, too. (yes, yes..it's correct)

Why oh why correct someone's spelling when they ask for help with grammar? If Yoong Liat has a spell-checker, he would be best served by advising him to use it in the future instead of risking your looking so petty.

I understand. But the irony was too great to pass up. Very Happy

Maybe Yoong Liat is clumsy with keyboard at times, as well? Perhaps he was in a hurry? So many reasons for typos and/or misspells. I need a reminder now and then that it's a lot harder for someone whose first language is NOT our English to type in our language.

Rag, I don't know how many of these you've been involved in, but I've been involved in a lot. The discussions get very intense, and they cover a lot of issues, sometimes not necessarily where Yoong starts them, but I think that's because language ties directly into so much culture, in the anthropological sense. Brit vs. American English, formal vs. conversational vs slang. Discussions of exactly what context Yoong is coming from in attempts to make sense of his'/her example sentences. Discussion of just what "correct" means (and no, that's not a Bill Clinton distinction), and how it is perfectly possible to have four or five versions of the sentence, all of which are "correct"). Since the example was all about misspelling or mistyping from the get-go ("univresity"), it didn't seem inapropos to bring that into the discussion.

It was a careless mistake, not that I don't know how to spell the word. And one lesson, if you point out another person's mistake, make sure your reply is free of typing error/s.

However, I must thank you very much for your reply to my queries.

I didn't spell 'correctly' wrongly. It was a typo. It was a careless mistake. You should be careful when you point out a questioner's error. Make sure your post is error-free.

Could you explain to me what you're saying? You mean you do not believe that it was a typo? I'm quite careless and often type wrongly. I believe you also typed 'correctly' wrongly. It is not because you didn't know how to spell the word.

Are you saying you believe I also typed "correctly" wrongly? I mean, I certainly typed "correctly" wrongly when I typed "corectly," but when I did that I was intentionally wrongly typing "correctly."
