i realised recently while in a debate with my dad, all i was doing was making him sad.
I was taking away part of the reason he can handle life.
Is it wrong to do that? to sit there and say well, christianity is an advanced form of egyptian sun worship. i mean its sort of cruel, isnt it?
i wasnt chastising him, we were debating, but he was losing badly.
but i felt bad, but i mean, sint it better to know the truth?
but then, ignorance really is bliss isnt it
Debating becomes something else unless done on reasonably equal footing...
There's nothing wrong with debating, but there are productive and unproductive ways to do it. I can't think of many contexts in which the Egyptian sun worship analogy would help to further your cause in a rational discussion; at that point, all you're really doing is name-calling.
i just realized how many typos were in the title. i need to slow the hell down...

You got a patent on "truth"?
if god is perfect, and the bible is the word of god, and the bible has inconsistencies and flaws, is god a liar or is he imperfect?
You needa go see Arella mae...
actually, you could say the real bible was corrupted by man in the first place as a test, couldnt ya?
You are responsible if you have set out to destroy a person's belief system, otherwise no. Still, 99% of the time it is in your best interest to disengage once you realize that it is happening. It is also the kind thing to do.
You dont know if he was sad from the things you were saying, or that he was sad he was having that kind of a conversation with his son.
If someone is questioning their own beliefs or trying to convert me, I have no problem debating them. If their beliefs give them comfort and don't harm anyone else, and you see that your arguments cause them distress without offering any benefit to them, then yes, it is unethical to continue.

Perhaps your understanding of the Bible is imperfect.....................................
I've mixed feelings.
First of all, I think Ogionik's dad could be my son, so I'd like to cut out the matter of challenge to some aging and about to die brain, unless, indeed the dad or another person is.
Here on the forum of many believers and agnostics and atheists who have fulminated in equal vehemence if not equal post numbers... everyone is slamming Ogionik for his lack of sensitivity?
I might too, if I knew more, but I don't yet.
Do you all mean a son should never challenge a father, as they are actually talking best they can, or are you all still irate about Ogionik's patently obnoxious thread about, at the least, bitches?
Back when I gather composure - to work out the 'mix' part of my feelings, the other side.

It wasn't my impression that anyone was trying to "slam" Ogionik for anything. We're just pointing out that comparing someone's belief to Egyptian sun worship is a surefire way to turn a discussion into the kind of vehement fulmination that, as you rightly point out, happens here all the time. Whether it happens in Ogionik's home or on A2K, it's still unproductive.
