Dear Alan

"Come here, my little man," said the policeman, kindly. "Why are you crying?"

Does the comma after 'policeman' serve any purpose? I think is is not required.

It's optional.

I tend to put in more commas than most, nowadays. I think the modern trend is to have more streamlined sentences. But is it better? I think not.
