We respect the decision of Mr Smith.
What does the sentence mean? I think it means one of the following, but I don't lknow which is correct.
1. We agree with Mr Smith.
2. We do not agree or disagree but is merely following the wish of Mr Smith.
Many thanks.
The sentence does not provide enough information for us to determine whether the speakers are agreeing or disagreeing. It may be that they agree; it may be that they disagree; it may be that they neither agree nor disagree. Without context, we cannot say for sure what the speakers' stance is. All we know from this sentence is that the speakers are acknowledging Mr. Smith's right to make the decision that he did.
We feel that Mr. Smith's judgement is sound and he is capable of making a good choice. No indication is given from context provided if there is an agreement with the decision.
