As a high school sophomore in Houston, Texas, he won first prize in a local science fair for a data encryption program he wrote. In his senior year, he took top prize in an international science and engineering fair for designing a program to analyze and sort DNA patterns.

Can anyone tell me which grades the boy was in when he was a sophomore and senior respectively?

10th year and 12th year?
or
7th and 9th?

Probably 10th and 12th, respectively, since in most American schools 7th grade is not considered high school.

High school starts with the 9th grade.

9th grade = freshman
10th grade = sophomore
11th grade = junior
12th grade = senior.
