My reasoning...

(a) The conventions in English regarding personal pronouns

(b) the following...

"Your English seems as good as most of us native speakers"

His English is as good as a native speaker?

Surely it means...

"Your English seems as good as that which most of us native speakers speak"

"Your English seems as good as that which most of us native speakers speak"

Us speak?

Exactly right, sir. Laughing

Still, it was a 'stream of consciousness' type blurb..

I was aiming my justification at McTag, so thanks for the backup...

Hi, I'm back. I follow the logic, thanks for setting it out, but I think it is flawed.

It is correct to say "They don't sound and good as we (do)" but I think it is not incorrect to say "They don't sound as good as us."
I think common usage dictates that.

And to most ears, "They don't sound as good as we" just sounds weird nowadays. You might find its equivalent in Her Majesty's Christmas Message, but in few other places I bet.

And despite that, the examples being discussed aboue are not even so clear-cut as that, imho.

You wrote,
"Your English seems as good as that of most of we native speakers"

I beg you to reconsider:

as good as us
As good as most of us
as good as that of most of us

seem to me correct.

Aha. I am not a connoisseur of the Wigan pie scene, but I know some that are. I have friends in Hindley and Ashton (but I try not to mention this in polite company  )

Hi Contrex and Mc Tag

Being a non-native English speaker, I don't understand what both of you are talking about.

I would appreciate it very much if you could paraphrase what you said so that I can understand what is going on.

Many thanks.

Some things it's better not to know. Smile

It won't help you with your pursuit of perfection in English, but Contrex just told me that his wife comes from round here. Wigan is a place about 30 miles from where I live, and it's famous for its pies. People from Wigan are very fond of eating meat pies, so it is said.
Places like Swinley, Hindley and Ashton are part of that conurbation.
There, is that better?

He actually started that as a smokescreen because he realised he was wrong, I think.
