Law professors don't necessarily have to be lawyers. There are a lot of law professors out there who have never practiced law, so I don't think we can just assume that Kingsfield was a lawyer.

Do you remember that Kingsfield's daughter was going through a divorce? Her soon-to-be ex-husband appears in one scene. He was a former student of Kingsfield and may have been a lawyer.

I suppose it depends on how you define "lawyer": can someone be considered a lawyer only if s/he practices law, or is admission to the bar sufficient? My suggestion that Kingsfield could probably be counted as a lawyer wasn't based on any claim that he practiced law; it was based on the assumption that he "must have been admitted to the bar". As a member of the New York and New Jersey bars, I consider myself a lawyer (and so do the states of New York and New Jersey, when they take their pounds of flesh from me every year in the form of bar registration fees), despite the fact that I no longer practice law on a full-time basis.
