WOW! So, don't leave us in suspense. What was the play?

Well, it looks like lois has gone off and left us in suspense! While we're waiting for her to come back and enlighten us, here's a new question.

Anybody up for a "movie scene" field trip next month? I just got an invitation from

Gene Kelly,

who wants to take Raggedy, mac, loislane, and me on an outing in a couple of weeks. The only catch is, we have to choose who we want to see, and it might be tough for us to come to an agreement. We have to choose among:

Tab Hunter (who would be my choice)

Johnny Depp (probably Raggedy's choice)

George C. Scott (loislane's choice), and

John Carradine (probably mac's choice)

(wandeljw, don't feel left out: for reasons that will become apparent when this question is solved, I couldn't figure out a way to work you into the question.)

Laughing I'm laughing because I just watched Pirates of the Caribbean and I can assure you I don't want to go there.

Good question. This is going to be a toughie, but a fun one.

Clever:

Gene Kelly - Take Me Out to the Ball Game

Tab Hunter - Damn Yankees, of course

Johnny Depp - The Pirates of the Caribbean

George C. Scott - They Might Be Giants

John Carradine - The Astro-Zombies

You got them all, and just in time, because I'm about to leave the office!

I've been having trouble getting online at home, but I'll try to come back here this evening to see if you've posted a new question.

I'll try to think of one, but don't forget you are still indebted.

I can't wait until our Borough Firemen hold their annual carnival. There will be:

Robert Mitchum
Barbara Hershey
Shirley Jones
James Coburn

and what the kids want to see most. I hope he shows up this year:

Rip Torn

(I'll check in first thing in the A.M. if I don't see you this evening.)

Great questions both of you! Very Happy

You're right, lois, anchoring that basketball hoop was quite the achievement. Hopefully it didn't have to get set in a quick change! Rolling Eyes

One of the reasons it took me so long to get back here (apart from the fact that AOL has crashed on me about ten times in the past hour) is that I had trouble tearing myself away from the book I'm reading: Baker Towers, by Jennifer Haigh, a novel about life in a Pennsylvania coal mining town in the 1940's and 1950's (and maybe beyond -- I'm up to the 50's now, and I'm about two-thirds of the way through the book). I'm really enjoying the book, but here's the weird part: earlier today, I read a chapter describing the town's annual firemen's festival -- and now here we are at a firemen's carnival, where we'll find:

Two for the Seesaw (Mitchum)
Swing Kids (Hershey)
Carousel (Jones)
Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round (Coburn)

and (I hope he shows up this year, too)

One Trick Pony (Torn)

bree,

I just wanted to say your baseball team question was very clever. It is hard to find a movie for the Chicago teams (Cubs and White Sox). My choice may have been Shirley Temple "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer".

Thanks, wandeljw. "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer" would have been a good choice. There's also "Eight Men Out", John Sayles's movie about the "Black Sox" scandal, but that might have been a little too tenuous.

You are absolutely correct, Bree.

Did the Bakerston Carnival have a one-trick or two-trick pony?

Bakers Towers sounds like a fascinating book. I think I'll get it, but should I read Mrs. Kimbel first? (I have heard of Bakerstown near Butler, Pa. which is approximately 50 miles from Pittsburgh, Pa. We often went to Lake Arthur, Moraine State Park, Butler, Pa. to swim.)

I'm leaving shortly to meet a friend for lunch, but will return around 2PM for the next question round. Very Happy

No ponies were mentioned in the book's description of the carnival, just the "Battle of the Barrel" (basically, a tug-of-war involving a barrel of water).

This is the first book by Jennifer Haigh that I've read, so I can't tell you whether Mrs. Kimble is worth reading. From the description on Amazon, it sounds very different from Baker Towers.

I read this too quickly, Bree:

"A stunning follow-up to her bestselling debut,
Mrs. Kimble, Jennifer Haigh returns with
Baker Towers, a compelling story of love and loss
in a western Pennsylvania mining town in
the years after World War II."

When I saw "follow-up", I mistakenly assumed Baker Towers was a sequel.

That's an understandable mistake!

I'm afraid I'm going to be disgustingly busy at work for the next few days, so I may not be around A2K much. I'll drop in when I can.

Sad Dam Sam, as they say in Western PA. I'll try to think of some questions, or - maybe someone else will have one to offer.
