Ah, I see Richard Burton's name. I listen to the Camelot CD just to hear his voice. <sigh>

Loislane: Did you see Richard Burton in Camelot?

I just watched some really good documentaries on TCM, among which were Barbara Stanwyck, Myrna Loy, Marlene Dietrich (loved that one), Martin Scorsese and Howard Hughes. Sidney Poitier and Bette Davis are next in line.

So, has anyone seen "Aviator" yet? I just can't see Kate Beckinsdale as Ava Gardner.

"The Aviator" is on my list, but it's such a long movie (almost 3 hours) that finding a good time to see it is proving problematic. Most theaters where it's playing in Manhattan have a first showing around noon (which is a little too early for me, when I'm on vacation), and a second show around 4 p.m. (later than I'd like). But I'll get around to it eventually.

I'm leaving here in an hour or so to go see Hotel Rwanda, but I'll throw out a question which will probably be answered right away.

This actor has played:

Real-life prince
Fictional WWI pilot
Fictional WWII pilot
Fictional clergyman

Good question, Bree, but not one that I'm going to be able to answer right away. Laughing

Please tell us about the movie when you have time.

Now, back to the drawing board for some Princes.

Oh, maybe it's the man Kathy chose over Heathcliff. I have to check out WWII aviator.

I'll guess David Niven.

Fictional Clergyman - The Bishop's Wife
WWI aviator - The Dawn Patrol
WWII Aviator - A Matter of Life and Death (When I saw it, it was called Stairway to Heaven)
Real-life Prince - Bonnie Prince Charlie (Never saw that one)

Aggie--to jump back a tiny bit, I'll have to say I did see Burton. He was THE MAN. I had tons of photos and even (still) have the album of his Hamlet. Yum, what a voice.

My daughter has a binder full of Burton magazine photos and stills. I have quite a few myself. (lol) Seeing Burton in Camelot is an experience I'm sure you'll never forget.

Your mentioning of voices, Loislane, makes me think of a conversation with a friend during which , after seeing a Colman movie, she posed the question: "What voices today will be remembered in the same way as Burton, Colman, Walter Pidgeon, Gregory Peck, etc. I couldn't think of any.

Mac: I looked at the link, but have no idea. I think your answer and Phoenix's Golden Globes one are excellent. Very Happy

Beckinsdale didn't do justice to Gardner, or her script didn't

Blanchett nailed Hepburn..

Gwen Stefani nailed Harlow...though she oughta watch out...she'll get typecast.

Jude Law was over the top as Errol Flynn...a real nuisance in the film and I'm sure in real life.

Di Caprio is developing into an excellent actor.

Ian Holm does the best german weather man role I've ever seen...

David Niven is correct, and you got all the movies right (including the title of Stairway to Heaven, as far as I'm concerned).

Hotel Rwanda is very powerful, and Don Cheadle gives a great performance. I learned a lot about Rwanda that I didn't know before I saw the movie -- which wasn't hard, since my ignorance about the subject was virtually complete.

Oh, I meant to say, I thought of Niven because he has a lot in common with James Mason, who was the answer in the previous round: they were both English, their lifespans were very similar (1909 - 1984 for Mason, 1910- 1983 for Niven), both started their movie careers in the 1930's and ended them in the 1980's, and both were nominated once for an Oscar as best actor. Unlike Mason, however, Niven won his Oscar (for Separate Tables), and he was never nominated for an Oscar for a supporting role.

As is my knowledge of the incident. I just read a review by James Berardinelli who also expressed his ignorance of the subject, having only seen TV clips of the incident in 1994. Ebert said: "... a million members of the Tutsi tribe were killed by members of the Hutu tribe in a massacre that took place while the world looked away." It's hard to believe. I wonder if the movie will fare well at the box office.

New question coming up.

Very interesting about Mason and Niven. I viewed Niven's role in Separate Tables as a supporting role and was surprised when he was nominated for Best Actor.

New Q:

Real-life actor
Real-life General
Real-life boxer
Legendary marksman

I saw Closer today. I'd seen the play a few years ago, but didn't remember it well.

It was lovely to see a film about people and their behavior instead of special effects and spectacle. I'm still thinking about it - the characters were mostly unkind to each other, so it was hard to like them. But interesting, very interesting.

Hmm ... I was thinking I didn't need to see Closer because I'd seen the play, but now I'm wavering. You did the same thing to me last year, mac, with Big Fish, which I ended up seeing and was glad I did.

Is the answer to your question

Errol Flynn?

Real-life actor - Too Much, Too Soon (as John Barrymore)
Real-life General - They Died with Their Boots On (as Custer)
Real-life boxer - Gentleman Jim (as Corbett)
Legendary marksman - William Tell

If so, he's a tie-in to the previous question, because he co-starred with David Niven in The Dawn Patrol -- and, of course, is a character played by Jude Law in The Aviator.
