Hi Mac. Bree's right. Cate Blanchett is on at 6AM this Thursday. Darn. I see that I missed Michael Caine.

Whoops, I didn't read that very carefully. I won't be watching it if it's on at 5am my time!

Oooh. I just saw that Michael Caine is on Sept. 16 at 6AM. I'm going to tape them, Mac.

I saw a really good, but also sad, Oldie movie the other night. Not a musical, though.

A company of lions that were members of the Union.

Yes, Bree. Pride of the Yankees. That's the fourth time I've seen that one. And, of course, you are agreeing that the movie is sad and not my clue? Laughing

I'll post some more of the oldies I've been watching on TCM, if you are interested?

Yes to both: yes, it was the movie that was sad (not your clue, which was great), and yes, I'm interested in more of the oldies you've been watching!

King's Row

I've never seen that one -- is it any good?

Yes to King's Row, a book I read before my teens. The sequel was "Paris Mitchell of King's Row." (I don't know how the books would seem to me today, but at the time I loved them.) I still have King's Row and just might read it again. Because of censorship, the movie left the viewer in suspense about the relationship between father, (Claude Rains) and daughter,(Betty Field), but I thought it was well handled. As one of the themes concerns a sadistic doctor, Charles Coburn, there are many tragic scenes. I would have preferred another actor in Robert Cummings' (Paris Mitchell) role, but it was one of his best performances. The relationship between Cummings and his grandmother played by Maria Ouspenskaya was lovely. Beautiful piano music, too. And yes, Reagan was good in it. Ann Sheridan and Judith Anderson also had important roles. I've oftened wondered why there wasn't a remake although I don't think I'd care to see it as it would probably be too graphic for my delicate nature. Laughing

Oh, and did I like the movie. Yes!

BTW, did you ever get to see "This Property is Condemned?"

And, here's another Oldie I saw recently that I really enjoyed:

Irregular Crops

I'll have to think about your "Irregular Crops" clue for a bit!

Interesting summary of King's Row. And it's interesting that Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan were both in it, since (as I'm sure you know) they were the original choices for the parts that ended up being played by Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca.

I still haven't watched "This Property Is Condemned", for two reasons: (1) at this time of the year, most of my evenings are spent watching the Yankees (after piano practice, of course), and (2) I keep forgetting to bring the tape home from the office -- which of course means that, even if the Yankees happened to get rained out some night, I wouldn't be able to watch it because the dang thing isn't in my apartment! Maybe I'll get around to it on some dreary, baseball-less November night.

That's funny I posted and it didn't show up. Well, anyway, This Property Is Condemned is not one of my favorites, but now I'm curious as to what you think about it.

I wish you had TCM. Sure, they're probably outdated, but they did tell glorious tales, and Oh, what faces. <sigh>

I'm still clueless on your "Irregular Crops" movie, so I'll throw in three guesses (at least all the titles include kinds of crops) to get a hint:

Tobacco Road
The Corn Is Green
The Cabin in the Cotton

Good Guesses, but not what I'm looking for. And since this is way before your time, I'll give you several hints:

The movie might also have been titled: "Haphazard Reaping of Grain", which, of course, has nothing to do with the plot of the movie.

The actor, with the beautiful voice, starred on radio and later TV ,wth his wife. Their show makes me think of "Corridors of Vines".

Both the English actor and English actress in this movie were Oscar winners for other movies.

Well, your first clue was enough to give me the title of the movie : Random Harvest (another one I've never seen)

And clue #3 refers to the fact that Ronald Colman and Greer Garson won Oscars for A Double Life and Mrs. Miniver, respectively.

But now I'm stuck on clue #2: who was the actor with the beautiful voice, and what was the radio and TV show he and his wife starred on?

Oh, my sentence was confusing. Ronald Colman and wife, Benita Hume, also starred in "The Halls of Ivy' on radio and TV. Oh, you must see Random Harvest. Do you remember Ronald Colman's voice? He also starred in A Tale of Two Cities - and I can still hear him reciting those famous last lines.

Ah, that makes sense!

I just took a look at Ronald Colman's credits on imdb, and the only one of his movies I'm sure I've seen is The Talk of the Town. So many of his other movies sound familiar, but if I've seen them at all, it was on "Million Dollar Movie" on TV, many years ago. I clearly have a big gap to fill in my movie-watching resume!

Yes you do. Laughing Colman was much older then. But, never fear, I'll fill you in on the Oldies.

Just a brief note, (well maybe not so brief) with a few bits of info I'd like to share.

Last evening, I thought I'd take one last peek at the Abuzz movie game that I started on September 6, 2001 and which concluded on March 10, 2003, and as a result ,stayed up past 1:00 AM reading and even copying some of them. There were 49 threads with a minimum of 350 comments per thread. We probably covered over 1,500 movies. It was truly addictive. (I know I couldn't stay away.) No matter how many times, too frequent to mention, the site went down, we always managed to get back to the game. We even E-Mailed some questions and answers at one stage. (lol)

Not only did we cover the movies, we also had some very informative weather discussions. Heat index, conditions out West where the leaves never fall in the fall, thunderstorms and blizzards, (I found out that they don't build snowmen out west), and when the heat was too oppressive for me who had no air conditioning at the time, much encouragement was offered to take the necessary steps to improve my living conditions, -- which I did. (lol)

Bree kept us up-to-date on theatrical events, and with Mac's past experience with the stage, there wasn't much in that field left uncovered either. Lots of singing too. We were unanimous in our choice of favorite Broadway melodies - and actors and actresses, too.

We were also unanimous in our choices of the best hunks - Kevin Kline and Sean Connery ranking first.

A fellow living in Germany threw some really tough questions at us and when he mentioned being an extra in a movie shot in my city, I discovered that he and I rode the same streetcar line in my neighborhood back when. Small world, isn't it? (I often wonder what happened to him.)

I had never heard of IMDb when I started , knew nothing about copying or accessing links, and was absolutely amazed at the cooperation and kindness of all the folks there.

If Jespah or Lightwizard should by any chance read this thread, I wish to express my appreciation for their patience and guidance and willingness to get me started there, and more importantly, for guiding me to this site.

And to the regulars: Mac, Max, Bree, Roberta, THANKS for all the FUN. Very Happy
