The Band Wagon - I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan

At a memorial service for Arthur Schwartz (the kind they hold in Broadway theatres on a weekday afternoon, that are open to the public), I heard someone (it may have been Schwartz's son, Jonathan, who has a radio program here in NY) sing a version of that song in which the lyrics were changed to, "I love to lie awake in bed." I can't remember if he said those were the original lyrics, or if it was just a family joke to alter them that way. In any event, that's now how I always hear the words in my head!

This is apropos of nothing, but I thought you might be interested in the review of a Kennedy Center revival of The Glass Menagerie that appeared in the New York Times this morning. I was a little dubious when I heard that Sally Field had been cast as Amanda Wingfield, but the review indicates that she pulls it off.

Yes to Bandwagon.

And guess what I just found out.(from my Encyclopedia) - The song was originally : I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan (the Blue Pajama Song)1929. The original lyric was "I Love to Lie Awake in Bed" and was written much earlier by Lorenz Hart, while he and Schwartz were counselors at a boys' sumer camp. With a new lyric by Howard Dietz, it was introduced by Clifton Webb in the stage production, The Little Show.

I remember being impressed by Fred Astaire and Jack Buchanan's top hat and white tie performance in the movie "Bandwagon".

Thanks for the Glass Menagerie review. I've only seen the movie (with Gertrude Lawrfence), but I'm not surprised that Sally Field would be great in that role. After seeing Sally Field in "Sybil" on TV in 1976, I felt she could handle any role capably. (I never saw "The Flying Nun" on TV.)

Ah yes, as soon as I read your post about the song having been written at a summer camp, I remembered Jonathan Schwartz mentioning that when he sang the alternative version!

Stop it, Bree. You're stealing my questions. Although, I must say your definitions are much better. (lol)

Yes to Be a Clown.

I may be here intermittently today (actually, all this week): the boss is on vacation, and I'm covering for him, so I'll be somewhat busier than usual. But by all means, throw out another one, and I'll be back when I can get here.
