I saw a trailer for De-Lovely (the Kevin Kline/Cole Porter film) recently. It opens 6/25 in limited release. It looks like my kind of movie. I can't wait!

According to the soundtrack listing, that will be Sheryl Crow!

Aaah. They'll leave out the dancers. Oh, well. I'm just going to have to get with it. But, Porter's story is a dramatic one and Kevin Kline will be just fine. (They should have included, "I've Got You Under My Skin" and 10 more, though.) Laughing

I agree. Maybe they're in the movie but didn't make it onto the soundtrack...

For Cole Porter songs, they should have done a mini-series. Then we could hear them all. (lol)

Sorry for the delay -- I just got back from lunch, and it's 91 degrees out there, so I walked s-l-o-w-l-y while I was out!

I saw the trailer for De-lovely recently too, and thought it looked good (although trailers have been known to be misleading). I'm still on the fence about whether Ashley Judd (who plays Linda Porter) is a good actress or not, but she certainly looked great in the '30's clothes and hairstyles.

I need a bit of time to come up with a new scene, so if mac (or anyone else) wants to start a new one while I'm cogitating, please go ahead and do so.

You go right ahead and cogitate, Bree. And try to stay cool. Scorching here, too.

Wondering - did anyone here ever see Gary Grant in Night and Day. He warbled "You're the Tops". Kind of cute, really. (lol) And Mary Martin sang My Heart Belongs to Daddy. There was a specialty dance number to Begin the Beguine while it was sung by Carlos Ramiros and chorus.

Have you got a scene for us Bree? Looks like this thread is finally coming to an end.

Sorry, Raggedy, but my brain is a dry well at the moment. But even though I don't have a new scene, I hate to come here empty-handed, so instead of a scene I'll offer a link to an article that a lover of old movies like yourself should find interesting. The article is about Ronald Reagan's oratorical style, and it was written by a linguist who says that much of the language Reagan used was "drawn from the sentimental populism of the movies and plays of 1930's and 40's," like The Grapes of Wrath, and It's a Wonderful Life. The article is at:

And, Yes, He Was a Great Communicator

Thank you for the article, Bree. Very interesting. And since I refuse to discuss politics Laughing , I'll not comment any further - except to say, maybe he "did believe in the WAY he was saying it." Maybe, I've said too much already. (lol)

I'll throw a scene in here now and then just to keep the thread alive for awhile. My problem is I can't remember any scenes from the "new" movies.

In the meantime, this thread is open for any movie/stage discussions. Very Happy

hmmm. I wonder why certain words are underlined. I didn't underline anything. Maybe it has to do with the category.

Anyway, every Tuesday night in June, Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is featuring Cary Grant movies. So, last night I enjoyed the Bishop's Wife for the umpteenth time (love the ice skating scene), fell asleep through Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, but woke in time to watch the tearjerker of all time. I've seen it several times before, but last night I cried like a baby for at least five minutes straight.

Want to guess what it was?

It's an Oldie. He first sees the lady he will marry through the window of the record store where she works. He goes into the store and has her play a huge stack of records which he buys. He walks her home and then hands her the records. He tell her he'll have to listen to them at her place some time as he doesn't own a phonograph. The movie is presented in flashbacks as the leading lady sorts and plays the records.

That's a familiar scene, but I have no idea what movie it's from. Confused

The underlined words are a new ad-linking venture to make money for a2k. If you hover your cursor over the underlined word, you can preview what the link leads to. In the case of the word "movie" it appears to be a link to disneypictures.com...

I don't think I've seen that movie, and I don't have TCM, so I may never get to see it.

I'm tempted to cheat by going to Yahoo's TV listings and seeing what was on TCM last night, but I'll be good ... for a while.

Of course, it was Cary Grant, and I think it was one of his best. There is a scene where he is pleading before a judge, and when he breaks down in tears, he tears me apart. Crying or Very sad If you have standard cable, you'll be able to get TCM, Bree.

Unfortunately, my beloved cable provider offers TCM only as part of its digital television package. I'll probably bite the bullet and get DTV eventually (especially since it also includes BBC America, which I would love to have), but for now I'm content to stay with what I have.

Little do they know that if they required subscribers to have DTV in order to see the channel that carries the Yankee games, I'd be there in a minute!

By the way, I couldn't resist looking at Yahoo to see where your scene is from, so now I know the answer. I don't know how I missed that one, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen it.

Oh, I just noticed that I get BBC America. I'll have to watch it some time. I have Showtime, but rarely put it on. (Maybe once every two months).

If you had seen the movie, Bree, I feel certain you would remember it. There is a scene that takes place at Christmas that is unforgettable.
