Hi

Could someone please let me know what letters are missing from the following? It means a fancy dress.

ca_ _u_e.

I wonder whether my daughter has left out something, but I can't think of what letters to fill in the blanks.

Many thanks.

Your daughter (or someone) has mistaken one letter. The first "a" should be an "o".

It is actually a French word in common use within the high end fashion industry.

A better meaning is
being, having, or suggesting the style, quality, etc., of a fashion designer; very fashionable:

Carousing would be a German trait I believe Francis.

I am going to suggest the answer is COSTUME.

COSTUME = fancy dress
noun: costume 1. the attire worn in a play or at a fancy dress ball; "he won the prize for best costume" 2. unusual or period attire not characteristic of or appropriate to the time and place; "in spite of the heat he insisted on his woolen costume" 3. the prevalent fashion of dress including accessories and hair style as well as garments 4. the attire characteristic of a country or a time or a social class; "he wore his national costume"

But it starts with 'ca', not .'co'

Yoong, as I mentioned in my first post I feel the second letter in your puzzel is a mistake. Dutchy is very very good at crossword puzzels. If there was a "Ca" word meaning fancy dress he would know.

Dutchies answer brings up a good discussion point.

A fancy dress could be an evening gown.
Fancy dress could be a costume such as a superman costume.

Anyone can comment.

Is fancy dress an outdated or regional term for costume?

Corsage, for example..

In English, a corsage is a bunch of flowers worn on the wrist or on clothes. At weddings, a corsage is a single bloom, or small group of blooms, worn either on the wrist or pinned to the chest. Generally worn by female relatives of the bride and groom. At British formal weddings, corsages are just worn on clothes.
