BEST HEALTHCARE IN THE WORLD, BABY...

A pair of researchers has just published an update that compares various countries on their rates of "amenable mortality," defined as deaths that are "potentially preventable with timely and effective health care." In 1997, the United States ranked 15th out of 19 industrialized countries. So how are we doing now?

Answer: we're now 19th out of 19. The rest of the countries have improved their performance by an average of 16%, while the U.S., that well-known engine of healthcare innovation, has improved by only 4%. So now we're in last place.

But there's a bright side: at least our healthcare isn't funded by the government, like it is in France. Keep that in mind if someone you know dies of preventable causes. Their odds would have been a whole lot better in Paris, but who'd want to live in a socialist hellhole like that anyway?

Last month, the California Nurses Association and the National Nurses Organizing Committee ran ads in Iowa newspapers advocating for a single-payer health-care bill, highlighting the fact Vice President Dick Cheney has benefited from his government-provided coverage. "If he were anyone else, he'd probably be dead by now" due to his long history of health problems, claimed the ad.

In the group's newest round of ads, which ran "in eight New Hampshire papers" on Friday and will go "national" today, they dub a new name for "guaranteed, publicly-funded health care for all Americans": CheneyCare

Clearly, in all of those countries, doctors kill more people than guns do.

Hey, in the state of Kentucky one in ten people still have their teeth. That's good isn't it??? (wink put here in case TTH shows up)

This could all be prevented with a little education and preventive care starting in pre-school. Would it really kill this country to throw a bit of our tax money to providing a child with a toothbrush, toothpaste and a little knowledge on how to take care of their mouth. Better our tax money should be spent on "fixing" Iraq?

The Toll of Poverty and Neglect on American Teeth

Mexican's now have better access to dental care than Americans. One of the largest growth sectors is medical tourism. Maybe Mexico and Canada will have to build a fence to keep out Americans who need affordable health care.

When my father ran a foundry business, about half of the new hires would stop brushing their teeth after they passed their trial period. That way they could get dentures faster.

You can't fix stupid.

My father should have excluded anesthetic from their coverage.

Very good.

So you'd agree that health insurance is a good thing for you, right?

I'm surprised to see Finland so far down. They're way up there in educational results, but I must have been seeing a connection that wasn't there.

Well, when you compare the 1997/1998 data (onyl the bottom of the list) ...

to 2002/2003

http://i8.tinypic.com/8ayf5fk.jpg ...

... Finland saw these types of deaths decline from 116 to 93; the USA only from 115 to 110.

I've learned that from you. Ignorance, however, is fixable and most people suffer from ignorance. Prevention is cheap compared to cures, but in this country we don't act until the emergency is at our own doorstep.

Let's face it cjhsa, you are an indentured corporate servant because you have to pony up the material goods your family demands and you can't go without the insurance. I remember when you lost your job in CA - you were one very worried dude, and rightly so, this a country with a very deep dark hole for those who are kicked and can't get back on their feet. You were lucky to get another chance and you were lucky you had the kind of background that gave you the skills to make the most of that chance. If you can't be compassionate, at least be grateful that you never needed a hand-up from a person like yourself.
