Drug prices are artificially high because the government wont buy in bulk to drive down the prices. The republicans put a system in place that forced people to pay the prices that drug companies wanted. You can buy drugs in canada or mexico at substantially lower prices. And the same goes for the insurance drug programs also.

Drug prices are artificially high in the U.S. because the government buys drugs for a large segment of the population. Because drugs are considered to be an entitlement for some people- something that the government must provide- drug companies price their products accordingly. The demand is artificially high so prices are artificially high.

Anything the government (especially the federal government) is willing to pay for is priced higher than market forces would otherwise allow. This is more readily apparent with things like college tuition.

How about a little proof for your statement that the government buys drugs for the population of the U.S. The only government entinty that buys drugs as far as I know is the defense dept. I am a citizen of the U.S and no one pays for my drugs but me.

My mother is on Medicare due to her disability. The federal government does pay for part of her medications.

Then what was GW's Medicare drug plan all about?

If the government gives you money that you can only use to buy medications with, how is the government not buying medications?

GW's drug plan was about forcing old people into drug plans for the benefit of insurance companies. The government does not buy drugs but private insurance companies do. I haven't gotten into any of the drug plans because of the doughnut hole and the fact that they can change your plan without informing you that they are changing it.

Who pays the premiums for these insurance policies? It can't be the old people since if they could have afforded such insurance there would have no reason to create GW's program. It can't be the insurance companies because such a give-a-way program would lower their profits. So it must be the government.

So the government pays for insurance policies that are used to buy drugs. So how is the government not buying drugs?

You have to be the only person who posts here that is even stupider than me. The people who belong to the so called social security drug plan pay for their own plans. The government supervises the plans but does not pay for them.

Then how and why were the Limbaugh types complaining that GW's drug plan is the most costly federal entitlement program since the Great Society?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medicare_Part_D

"Medicare Part D is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries in the United States."

What does subsidize mean if not that the government pays for something on someone else's behalf?

"The benefit is administered by private insurance plans that are reimbursed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)."

Reimbursed means that the government pays the insurance companies back for their cost in buying drugs for Part D beneficiaries.

The government gives money to insurance companies who give money to Part D beneficiaries who must use the money to buy prescription drugs. The government is buying drugs. This is a really simple concept. Why can you not understand it?

You have proof that Medicare Part D isn't costing the federal government any money?

I don't know. But I bet that you are costing the federal government money in police protection, fire protection, and the protection that is afforded you by the military. Why don't you go back to listening to Limbaugh and his ilk so you can justify your beliefs. Im certainly not going to waste my time arguing with someone like you.
