When hypnotized subjects are told that they are deaf and are then asked whether they can hear the hypnotist, they reply, "No." Some theorists try to explain this result by arguing that the selves of hypnotized subjects are dissociated into separate parts, and that the part that is deaf is dissociated from the part that replies.

can you please tell me the meaning of the "hypnotized subjects" ?
any example please ?

can you please tell me the meaning of the" selves of hypnotized subjects "?

When hypnotized subjects are told that they are deaf and are then asked whether they can hear the hypnotist, they reply, "No."

SUBJECTS are people who are taking part in this experiment.
Some theorists try to explain this result by arguing that the selves of hypnotized subjects are dissociated into separate parts, and that the part that is deaf is dissociated from the part that replies.

Parts = ability to hear and the ability to speak.

Now . . . what is the GMAT question???

I beg to differ.

"Hypnotised subjects" means "hypnotized people".

"the selves of hypnotized subjects" means "the conscious minds of hypnotised people"

ok.
so if i simplify this sentence it becomes something like this..

When hypnotized people are told that they are deaf and are then asked whether they can hear the hypnotist, they reply, "No." Some theorists try to explain this result by arguing that the conscious minds of hypnotized people are dissociated into separate parts, and that the part that is deaf is dissociated from the part that replies.

still the bold sentence is confusing me.

it says dissociated into separate parts and dissociated from the part that replies.

can you comment on this part please ?

thanks

"dissociated" means "separated" or "divided". The bold sentence means

"divided into separate parts and separated from the part that replies."

THINK!!!

Could a deaf person even HEAR a question?

No!!!

But hypnotized people who are told they are deaf DO answer the question!!

So . . . the theory is that the subconscious mind, even when it is persuaded by hypnotism that it is DEAF, continues to use its other parts and will answer the question.
