Determining whether smearing various substances on new guitar strings causes them to go dead
whats the meaning of smearing ?
i don't understand the meaning
Smearing means crudely or messily spreading a substance on a surface.
thats was helpful.
thanks
If the author of the advice thought that applying various mixtures to the strings was helpful, he'd probably have said "rubbing" or "painting".

Agreed. A smear is generally unwanted.
Dirt and sweat do get smeared on guitar strings, just from time and use. This can cause the strings to go dead.
Applying a coat of protectent on the stings helps.
you can buy coated guitar strings. they are twice as expensive but they last twice as long. when first put on they are VERY bright. They're a little rough on the fingers until you get used to them. I use the brand Elixir.
