As we all have heard on the news, Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated. I think this is a terrible tragedy that no one but the news seems to want to talk about. She was the hope and guiding light of her people. She could understand the Indian, Pakistani, Iranian, Kurdish and possibly the Hindu's. She was a virtual melting pot of all of the societies surrounding her country. I hope that in her death, something changes in the Pakistani government and people. I hope that they can see her vision of a new modern Muslim country that can be free in their own self governing ways. Not every country can be just like America. They have different philosophies and problems that we don't. I just hope that they find their own freedoms and not forget her. I read an article today that reminded me of when Kennedy was shot in the parade. How young of a country they are and look where they are going!
I don't know much about the politics of Pakistan, but I know they lost a brave leader today. She knew Pakistan was dangerous for her but she chose to be there anyway because she believed the people of Pakistan needed her. How many US politicians have that kind of passion and strength?
I think her death, as a consequence of the sacrifices she chose to make, put a lot of world leaders to shame today, including Musharraf. And when the Pakistani people start to really think about who sacrificed the most for them, I think the leaders who are left standing are suddenly going to appear very weak in comparison. And I expect that the Pakistanis will ask Musharraf to pay.
This was quite shocking news. I had had hope that she would help to open up the government there. But, I feared she was behaving suicidally. Seems she was.
You're right, littlek - in fact, in the CBC profile on her, she is quoted as saying (several times), Never trust military rule"... it's predictable but sad.
